I just went out and baught the primos 3 pack mouth call with the cd. Id suggest  anyone wanting to learn how to use a mouth call to buy this. I absolutly sucked at mouth calls..and now after listening to this i sound like a turkey with a stick in its throat.

Cody Slates, Smiths Box, Adventure/Chestnut Ridge/ or Woodhaven mouth calls.  A new guy in the market this year is Tom Teasers (nice diaphragms)  I will also stretch my own mouth calls generally in a cutter,v-cut, or turkey track.  As for the big commercially made calls... This year, Paul Butski is stretching calls for HS and the gold flex are not bad, Knight and Hale continues to produce quality diaphragms and Primos has one or two decent diaphragms (not really a Primos fan).

Got a primos power crystal that works great.

Mouth calls are the go to ones for me. You can make so many different sounds...

How many calls you guys carry with you??

    I carry.

1.Primos power crystal, with rosewood, maple, and a plastic striker.
    2.Gobbler tube
3.6 mouth calls in a case
4.Quaker Boy little one sider box call
    5.Easy Yelper box call
    6.Crow call
    7.Barred Owl hooter
    8. And once in a while on the first morning I will carry my Elk bugle. Scares the hell out of the local amish when you fire that up in the morning. I like to use it when they try and stalk me when I'm calling.

Counting mouth calls, I usually have around 15 calls on me.  I still employ a boat paddle occasionally on windy days.  The one call I never use is the gobble tube or any other gobble call (I can gobble better with a diphragm anyways).  Too many jaggers out there shoot at sounds and or motions and I really don't wish to become a statistic.  In my mind, using a jake decoy in a field and opening up with a gobble is a sure fire recipe to take a load of hevishot in the face.

    Agree!

Also, stay away from those sonic dome mini mouth calls. I thought my mouth was smaller then normal till i stuck one of those in my mouth, its for a kid!

I havn't found very many commercial mouth calls that I like, the latex is so thick.  I like the mountain hollow calls, I typically get them at the expo.  I bought a few legacy mouth calls last year, I thougt they sound pretty good.  the only thing I didn't like is they deteriorated pretty quick, I forgot to put them in the freezer.  Anyone else ever try this brand?

S10 you might try Rich's Outdoor World in Summerville (866) 857-6748.  The last time I was there he told me Mr. Smith had stopped making calls.  He would be the one to know since they live in the same town.  Rich may even have some kicking around.

I carry an owl hooter (which is pretty much useless, because every joe blow starts blowing on them and then sitting down and calling in turkeys about the first of april here) a crow call, and 3 quaker boy diaphrams.  I gave up on my box calls and slate, cause I think I can do almost as good with the mouth calls and no movement.  The kids I have with me wiggle around enough to cause me problems......

Better too far back, than too far forward.

    1) Knight & Hale Slatek slate < hickory striker / pine striker

    2) Box call when birds get close

    3) Jake decoy

Thats all I've EVER needed . I never needed to use a locator call ; always had an active area to set up in . Our state has been turkey heaven the last 10 years. Are you guys really going to harvest two birds this year ; I know its legal but what are your reasons for doing so???? Remember if you thin them gobblers too much you're likely decreasing your chances for a limb hanger next year .... Spurs take a long time to mature ! Watching two limb hangers running around right now !

I will shoot 2 birds in PA, 2 in Ohio, 2 in NY and hopefully 2 in North Carolina.  This has started out as a decent thread, lets not ruin it.

Not trying to ruin . Was just curious how many folks get two . Didn't mean to come across like a dik . Hope you didn't take it as a negative ... Not my intention. Good for you glad you take that much interest in spring gobbler . I don't know about you but that is my favorite time of year . Turkey Mornings , trout afternoons , and night time striper fishing . Don't get any better than End April - End May !

Fair enough..  I absolutely love chasing them.  When I lived in NY, I guided for a fairly large establishment and remain friends with the owner to this day.  I still take guys out for him occasionally if I am in the area.  That give me pretty decent access to many acres.

    One is enough...

Funny thing is, people pay $20 for a second turkey tag but $6 for a doe tag... where is the logic in that.

It's all about the sport, not the meat. I would rather shoot one long beard than a truckload of doe. I will try for two plus call one for my buddy and one for my grandson in Pa., and may go to Ohio, mainly to gain some more access for bow hunting. Archery hunting, Gobbler hunting, Steelhead fishing= life is good

The point of it is to locate the bird without actually calling. You could try it, im sure you wouldnt be the first.

Are you talking about Smiths box calls?  They're handled by another company.  I found them last spring, bought one and I've already killed turkeys with it.  A good friend of mine from New Castle had one of the originals and this one sounds very similar.  I used to use a Primos Battleship, particularly on windy days, but use nothing but this one now.  I don't even carry my lynch or Benson anymore.

Here's the link if you want to look.  I used Paypal for payment and received it quickly

Thanks for the head's up, I did not realize they were separate companies.  S10, I apologize for the misinformation (silly me to think that only one Smith should make calls ).  I have an original Smith's from almost 20 years ago.  It is in mint condition, but does not seem to call birds like it once did.  I have been told that as boxes age, the tonal qualities change.  I do know that for five years or so, it was pure poison on any bird that heard it (there was no such thing as "henned up or hanging up").
