I know Russ real well, he went ice fishing in Canada with me and my husband a few years ago. I lost my husband a year and a half ago, so I usually fish by myself. My husband raised choc. labs, and I continue to do so.

so you know "irish", eh?  i would shop over at conneaut once in awhile also.  the gentleman there had another choc. lab.  spent more time petting that dog than buying.  hey, i remember russ talking about fishing at lake simcoe or rice lake for perch through the ice and really doing good.  he said he and his buddies kept the perch on ice at the motel that he stayed at.  also said that they couldn't go back to the same hotel the next year.  wasn't you, was it?  laughed pretty hard.  russ got me into wading in the late 70s when we used to have no problem limiting out (8 fish) on nice sized fish.  we never quite kept limits, but sure had fun with silver #11 rapalas painted with clear finger nail polish.  if you should see him, tell me that you chatted with the duckhunter from youngstown.  he and the old police chief and i were buddies.

Fished off Pandanarum Monday night and the ice was awful.  The shore ice is virtually gone, in fact my buddy went through.  Had to "walk the plank" to get on.  IT was a LONG miserable walk to get out to Hemlock Island because there was about a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of ice on top with about 6" of slush underneath before you got to the good ice that appeared to vary between 6 and 8 inches.  The top 4" or so was starting to look honeycombed and the last 3 or 4" was decent.

BTW...

The bite was bad.  2 nice 'gills, 1 decent crappie, 2 misses on flags and 2 20"+ channel cats
