Skunked last night at the stand I shot my buck from last year.  Pulled the camera card and the evening on the day I set it out (9/19, haven't checked it since then), there was a 10 pt. and an 8 pt. that moved through.  That was the only video I got and I assume they "broke up" and went their separate ways shortly thereafter.  Lots of doe/fawns on the camera, which is good come rut time for this stand.  Only one other small buck, a 3 pt., a couple different days.  Did get two yotes, one pure black and one smaller, regular coated one.  This stand is relatively close to houses in Jefferson Hills.  Probably not many cats running loose around here....

Work has been keeping me busy, but with a light rain, some steady wind, and cooler temps I couldn't help but go out this afternoon. Sat 4-630 when the rain started picking up. Nothing. Saw more within 50yds of the house on my short walk out than I did in the stand. First a fox, then the 2 motherless fawns that seem to hang around the house and haunt me. One of them bolted, but the other was trying to figure out what I was and ran up to me 10yds away where we had a staredown. Back at it Saturday afternoon. Looks like a nice cold front on the way. Good luck out there!

Saw a pretty good buck this morning prior to legal light. I know his beams were outside of his ears but too dark to tell much more about him. Ended up seeing 7 does as well but all too far for a shot.

Sat 330 til dark this evening. Temps made it feel like it should've been a good night, but the deer thought otherwise.

Welp, daughter and I got the big skunko last night in the ground blind.  Pretty warm.  Did see a black squirrel and a pileated woodpecker entertained us for 10 min. or so.  My daughter did get annoyed with it after 5 min. and the racket it made but I told her, still not as bad as a red squirrel that picks you out and menaces you for the remainder of your archery hunt..........weather forecast stinks for the next several days.....and I still have 21.5 days of vacation to use....hopefully some of the rain days next week are just light rain and not too windy....

The wife and I have been out the last 3 evenings in the light rain/misty conditions we've had here in the NW. The 1.5-2.5 bucks have been on the prowl and harassing every doe they can find. Unfortunately none of the legal ones have either gotten close enough or stopped long enough for a shot.  Gonna give it a break for a couple of days with temps in the 70's and get some yard/ winter prep. work done. I have vacation time starting the 1st week of Nov.

Out last night saw a spike that was on the search for love, and a doe that ran right in under the stand and stared at me like " I see you".
Different property tonight saw another spike and about 50 squirrels/chipmunks. Was hot out this afternoon for sure.

Love the finger explanation-- told it to my Barber this AM= he came back with THE RULE OF THUMB.
Seems that sometime back in Ireland it was illegal to beat your wife with a stick thicker than your thumb.

Hot and breezy tonight. Seen a doe and fawn right after I set up and then a button buck about 20 min. Ago. When the breeze does calm down, hard to hear anything but the squirrels and chippies in the dry leaves.

Son was off of school today, took he and my dad out for the Jr/Sr doe hunt. Son and I sat up in a corner of a small field. About 7:30 a good sized 8 pt came out the corner across from us. Doing the same as us glassing the field. Went for about 15 minutes before I remembered I had my call in my bag. Sure enough as soon as I hit it, he came right to us at 18 yds. We had a large oak tree we were using for cover. I could of easily got to draw from the ground on him. If I only took my bow☹️

Moses that was too much... 🤭

.... hot and breezy tonight, cold and breezy tomorrow night.

78 degrees🥵 at Erie International this evening and 35 degrees, forecast for tomorrow night.🥶

Perhaps this cold front will get the big boys movin a little more.

Strong storms with high gusty winds forecast tonight, maybe knock some leaves off the trees. Lightning flashing as I type.

Good luck everybody.

Absolutly pouring here now with some hail mixed in in my part of crawford county. Should make for a nice quiet walk in tomorrow morning. Happy the colder temps are on the way. Didn't even bother hunting in the heat today.

Ending up having a spike come in and check out a scrape.  I think he was harassing a doe that came through 10 min early huffing and puffing.  As it was getting dark, several deer were coming in but I had to jet and ending up spooking them on my climb down.  There were 3 or 4 so hopefully just some doe and fawns.   Kicked out 3 or 4 more on the walk out.....better night than I expected....

I was so excited to hunt in the 80 degree temperatures yesterday evening that I mowed the yard instead.

Saturday morning I decided to not hunt in the steady drizzle and instead put on my rain jacket and checked my rut stands. Moved one ladder stand to an area I have a gut feeling about. One bench down from the top of a ridge that connects two bedding areas. I can see this bench from one of my other stands and often see deer scooting along it in November.

Saturday afternoon I hunted a different area and seen 6 doe. Too far for any shooting.

Its getting closer fellas. It about to bust loose here in another week, hopefully.

Re: 2020 archery thread 2020/10/25 09:13:07 (permalink)
Went to my favorite doe stand yesterday morning trying to put some meat in the freezer. Sure enough around 9 they played right along and a group of 5 came in, except they can from behind me which is pretty rare. Coulndt get turned on them with all the wary eyes watching before they got nervous and trotted off. Only other action was a hawk that swooped in and tried to pick off a squirrel.

Afternoon sit was behind my house. Spotted a doe 80yds out in the brush, and 10 min later a scrawny 6pt gave me the perfect broadside shot for 10 min or so. He might have been legal with 3 up on each side, but you would've needed a tape measure to see if any of his tines were 1" long...lol. Watched him beat the pizz out of a hemlock sapling for a while until he got wind of the doe that had passed earlier and sauntered off in her direction

Keep this under yinz hat but I still get the urge to do a little still hunting, when the conditions permit, so late this afternoon I did a little shoot and release.

I didn't see any buck but from the looks of the tree between these two antlerless deer, there certainly must be one around.

Re: 2020 archery thread 2020/10/26 14:53:59 (permalink)
Passed this fella 2 times earlier in the day on Saturday. So tempting me a third time I gave in to the offer. A what I consider a nice PA average 8 point (really a 7 with a broke off brow tine). I was alone, and photo was taken as soon as I walked up to him.

Every year I attempt to expand my tools in hunting. Last year I wanted to get comfortable hunting high lock on stands, I spent a lot of time in them and tagged last years buck from one.

This year I wanted to try saddle hunting, so all my sets were set up for saddles. Forcing me to either hunt a blind or my saddle. This is my first deer from a saddle. I enjoyed hunting this different approach and I hope to be able to keep doing it.

This was also my 2nd deer from permission property. After the mess my first deer on permission ground caused I didn’t hunt permission ground for 12 years. Bad taste in my mouth. So it was nice to have some permission ground to keep pressure lower on family ground.
