Good to hear you and the Mrs. made it to the lake Steve. Kinda sucks yinz had little luck with catching. My better half and I spent the day shopping at Pymie. We're still fishing to catch a good deal on some real estate. The lake looked very inviting but I only saw one pontoon in the area we were trolling. Later today it's a trip to Dennis RV, south of your piece of Penn's Woods, for a look at some alternatives.

Trolled all day from the dam to Linesville. Caught a 24" channel cat, 18" largemouth, and some small perch. But what a great day.

Re: LAKE WILHELM 2018 2018/08/06 09:40:05 (permalink)
Thought I'd give the North end a try on Saturday since I had to avoid the Arthur insanity and I didn't have a fishing buddy for the day anyway.  Launched my big round tub from the Sheakleyville "launch" bright and early.  Let's be clear here... if that is a launch then my boat is a Yacht.  It's more of a crummy old road that ends in the lake.  And the weeds there BOY HOWDY.  If you are paddling you'll be fine.  If you have a motor you are gonna chew some weeds.  So that's what I did.  Blender-ed my way out to the sort-of channel and headed under the bridge.  Went out to the 6 fow band and hit a bunch of stumps hoping for some crappie too dumb or lazy to be downlake where they should be.

Didn't happen that way.  Caught a half dozen shorts and one keeper crappie who wasn't much to brag about.  I'd have taken a dozen or so of his buddies but that wasn't to be.  I saw a snapping turtle that was GIGANTIC.  I mean capsize your kayak big.  I've seen and caught some impressive snappers but this guy was their granddaddy.  Caught a few bluegills also, none of any size.

Saw a bunch of schools of 2" or so shad.  Would be good bait but I'm pretty sure Wilhelm is a no cast net lake still.  Doesn't make much sense.

Not too many boats up there, maybe a handful.  Got out of there around 2pm.  Main lake was a bit of a zoo when I crossed the bridge headed home.  Beauty of a day even if the fish weren't cooperating.  Was going to use my leftover bait Sunday morning early at Arthur but my old bones were having none of that and I slept in instead.

Gooder too... none these fish made the trip home with me. That's cause, I'm a nice guy.... just ask me.😎

Those crappy look like they are used to eating some big shad. They would be hitting hot oil if they interfered in my bass fishing! Assuming it was bass you were targeting.

Pork a couple of em sure had some chubby bellies on them. Pretty sure they weren't carrying eggs. Wasn't seeing big balls of bait registering on my Helix either.

I hear ya on the fish meeting the frying pan but I did have a bit of luck ice fishing as well as good catching in the Spring.

Had those fish been Mr. Walleye, they would have been posing with my fillet knife.

Good times and tight lines.

Nice pictures there BTDT ... like Pork said think a few might have ended up in my cooler πŸ‘... have some left in my freezer but a few more would be better. As you know have a roofing project going on which they are almost done maybe tomorrow ... have to take neighbor’s car to get it inspected tomorrow for her kinda helping her out since she lost her husband 6 yrs ago .. so after that I hope to get a day or 2 on the water and many days in my tree stand as I have no venison in freezer ..... ok good luck when ya hit the water again & tree stand ...πŸΊπŸ‘

I've caught way more crappie and perch than walleyes, when trolling with Hot n Tots and Flicker shads, which that appears to be in that last photo.

Re: LAKE WILHELM 2018 2018/10/15 19:38:09 (permalink)
Hit Wilhelm yesterday, hoping to sink the boat with crappie before she gets put down for the winter.  Started out cold, think it was a balmy 43 when we launched around 9am.  Ended up nice though.  Put in a full day, not much to brag about.  Spent most of the day catching perch, and while I likes me some perch I can catch all I want 40 minutes south of Wilhelm.  Bluegills and pumpkinseed are beasts in this lake though.  Couple legit 9" gills went in the cooler.  Managed 10 keeper crappie and maybe that many throwbacks later in the day thanks to some help from a secret North of 80 resident.  Only thing that worked was a sabiki rig of all things.  Tipped with minnows.

The #1 launch is some seriously shallow BS.  I had to back my truck halfway into the lake to launch.  Both sides were the same.

And is it just me, or is Fergies bait shop really bad at counting?  I'm not one to complain about some freebie minnows, but I asked for the same amount of minnows as I get from Zelie and the lady gave me roughly 100,000.  Took me two tries to lift the bait cooler off the counter... and then i was afraid to put my hand in there.  Nice bait shop though.  Roomy and clean, decent selection of stuff.  Wish there was another fisherman to give my extra bait to though.  I'm close to done for the season so they went into the lake.  Maybe fatten up the crappies for the ice guys.

So Sam, tell us, what do you think of Fergies? Lucky you didn't get there in the afternoon just before closing. You might of needed a bait truck rather bait bucket. lol Hey, did ya make em an offer for the place.

Be neat as heck seeing a sign out front "under new management" welcome to ZELIE FERGIES. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Glad you got on some fish and as always enjoyed your rant.

Oh, by the way, have I ever mentioned launch one sucks for launching BIG boats. Especially during high tide?

Maybe put the boat up on her winters store but I wouldn't be in a hurry to winterize your tub. Some good fishing to be had before ice up.

I always ask for 2 dozen at Fergies, usually end up with 4.

I always go out of Launch 4. Plenty deep without backing the truck to the exhaust, and ramp is in good shape and centrally located to where I wanna fish

And a straight run down the road from the bait shop.  Bit of a run if you want to go downlake though.  What I really need to do is learn to catch crappies properly at Arthur instead of driving that far north.  But I always end up perch fishing instead, and the crappies that hang out with the perch are all small.  It's a curse.
