It had 3 to 5 inches of water on top yesterday. Good news is with the water temp being so low it should help save the ice through the warm spell. Once it drops ill be back out. Had almost 11 inches friday night.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2018 2018/01/29 17:12:59 (permalink)
I see according to PFC info on stocking that Shenango Lake received "ZERO" Walleye stocking in 2017 and Lake Wilhelm also got ZERO ! Shenango lake got 38k Walleye fingerlings in 2016 and only 1,800 fingerlings in 2015. Only 40K Walleye fingerlings in 3 years total ! What a joke for a lake that size.

Just a small example for comparing against Pymatuning who receives 5,875,000 fry and 147,000 fingerling total just last year only.

Not knocking Pymy, but fishing for Walleye in Wilhelm or Shenango is about a waste of time. The sad thing is Pymy Walleye fishing stunk as bad as those two also last year !

The new Inland Walleye stocking program is nothing but major stocking cut back in all local lakes other than Pymy. I dare any biologist or Pa. Fish Commissioner to prove me wrong !

Shenango River hasn't received a Walleye stocking since 2007 and is never getting another ever again. Now the Trout stocking has also been halted there too.....
How sad that is for future kids fishing.... a nice river close to neighborhoods and towns with barely no fish to catch.

I wonder if Ohio stocks any fish in Pymy?  I fished all three bodies of water last year with terrible results. I should have never sold my jet boat as the river continues to be a good fishery.

I think Ohio does stock Pymy but finding numbers has eluded me so far. I was trying to find out their numbers for Mosquito Lake also but just haven't been lucky. Maybe someone can find info and share .

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2018 2018/01/30 21:21:47 (permalink)
OK so I can't refuse an invitation to toss my two cents into the mix.   There is plenty of internet info saying the ODNR does stock Walleye, as well as other species of fish, into Pymatuning.   Howevvvvver, there does not appear (to date) any record of numbers (past or present) for fish placed into the waters of 'Pymie' by the ODNR.

Soooo, I placed a email to the ODNR asking where I may find on the internet, (if available; past & present) such facts and information.

If and when, such information becomes available, please rest assured, I ain't tellin nuun of yinz.

Thank you and tight lines.

Shenango is finally approaching 'normal winter pool' but as of yesterday, all seven sluice gates remained opened at 2.5 feet.   Hopefully the gates will soon close, except those needed to maintain a normal flow, and the lake will refreeze with the coming cold weather allowing for some great fishing through the ice.

Yea I have no idea why Ohio doesn't post stocking numbers on their lakes or rivers. At least it gives sportsmen an idea how their license dollars are being spent or invested. I'll give Pa. that much they do post all numbers by county and years.....very transparent ...the way it should be publicly.

Hope you find & share some info soon BTDT.....

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2018 2018/01/31 16:43:43 (permalink)
Have not heard a thing and I'm sure the sight said to expect a reply in 24 hours but maybe I misread the notation.  The best I can find is "Each year the Division of Wildlife stocks more than 20 million walleye fry and 2.5 million walleye fingerlings in 15-20 reservoirs to maintain high-quality fishing".

Also, the ODNR listed Mosquito as the number one Walleye lake and Pymatuning Lake as No. 2.   Listening to some of the old timers compare the fishery of today with that of yesteryear, I'm certain the listing for Pymie is correct.

If anything could be done to help with the Walleye fishery at Pymie, besides limiting the season, is to shut down the 'circus'.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2018 2018/01/31 19:24:31 (permalink)
I agree they allow that Pymy Walleye snagging fiasco to go on every spring season for weeks at the Spillway Outflow, especially after dark ! You would think by now someone in the local Pymy Fish Commission would temporarily shut it down during the spawn to stop that abuse. They choose to turn their heads and allow it to continue year after year. Sure they fine and catch a few but once those Fish Cops are gone look out ...it' rake and take !

They worry about limiting Crappie on size and numbers, but they let that circus continue without so much as trying to protect those spawning Walleye all bunched up in that outflow!

Funny how they observe everybody using Sonars , Cicadas , and Blade lures all vertical jigging aggressively and hardly a person using live bait or floating stick baits and think that's normal fishing !  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know and observe snagging at it's finest....or lowest !

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2018 2018/01/31 20:54:32 (permalink)
A prime location for natural Walleye spawning. It is said a female can drop 400, 000 eggs, which hatch in 10 days with no care from the adults. The young feed on zooplankton for several days before turning to other food sources and of course become a food source.

But the biologist need job security so they will trap the females, strip their eggs, raise the young in rearing tanks then dump the fry back into the lake, where they will become food for other fish. Priceless.

I didn't read the proposal but during my research, I came across a comment coming from the PFBC asking the anglers to contact our state politicians and push the proposal or we could expect, some cuts in certain programs.

I hope those cuts mean a major change & reduction in the biology department.

Not wanting to see anyone lose their job but given a choice of further lose to our fisheries VS unemployment, I wish the biologist the best in their new endeavors.
