Forest County Help Needed

I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some good trout fishing in Forest County.  My Mother In Law recently bought a camp about 10 miles outside of Marienville and I am very unfamiliar with the area.  I obviously don't want anyones secret spots but just a general idea of what creeks I should try would be very helpful.  It seems that a lot of creeks get stocked with trout in Forest County but a couple of the creeks I have checked out didn't look to great.  If you would rather email me that would be fine as well.  My email address is boliwj@hotmail.com
I appreciate any help you can give me.

    aranbp,
Thanks for the response.  It was very helpful.

    doubletaper,
I am a spin rod guy.  Would like to get into fly fishing at some point but just haven't found the time.  My camp is actually up towards Vowinckel.  I am just looking for a good place with some nice scenery.  I only keep maybe 5 fish a year and release the rest.  Just trying to get familiar with the area.  Thanks

dt, I got your PM's.  Thank you very much for the help.  I will be checking out a couple of the items you mentioned for sure.  I have heard mixed reviews about the fishing in the area but it seems like enough people have good things to say so I am excited to check the area out.

no-time, thank you very much for the info.  i will be checking out these spots as well.  I will be heading up shortly to do some scouting so I will be checking out the creeks you mentioned.

    Vowinckel

You don't say???  I hunted squirrels near there many years ago with a couple "friends", and we had a hell of a time.  Nice looking forest with a sweet looking stream running through it, bordering a huge horse ranch/farm/whatever.  It took us hours to drive home as we had to stop every half-dozen miles or so to pull more and more ticks off ourselves.  They just kept crawling out of our hair and clothes.   The driver got them more than everyone.  Worst hunting trip EVER!

If you find a sweet looking stream running through a pine woodlot next to as horse farm, DO NOT GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE!

Tionesta creek is a good one that flows through forest county.  The stream runs the stretch of 666 for quite a ways.  No secret holes but lots of room to fish.  Personally one of my favorite trout streams.  The other small streams like maple, bluejay, salmon are good streams but i'm not a big fan of small streams.  The drive to warren county can find you another long list of fine streams...

I always get a ride up there & usually don't remember the ride back ... Good times from what I can remember. Last time up I saw some guys(about 10 of em) wearing biker jackets (3 weeks ago) wardogs the jackets said . Are they a snowmobile crew or what . Never heard of em anyone know????? All I know is they blockaded the bathroom for some time & wouldn't let anyone do thier business so I had to pi$$ out in the snow ....

The owner at Ray's is a great dude.  Some friends and I were doing the "beer in every bar on 66" thing and stopped there.  They were already collecting the cover for the band that night but no one was really there yet.  6 of us walked in paid 2 bucks each (without complaining) had our beer and started to leave.  When he saw we weren't staying for the band, he came running over and gave each of us our cover back.  He didn't have to do that, it was already money in his pocket.  Good dude, made some long term customers.

The owner of Ray's is a good guy.  Nice place to have a few beers at too.  Oh and by the way the owner is the president (i think) of the Marienville Sportsman's club.  This club stocks alot of the smaller streams in the area.  Spring Creek, Maple and so fourth.  Always nice to help out the guys who run these clubs.

I will see you all there the first weekend of Trout.  Just hopefully they dont have any DUI check points again this year on 66 leaving Marienville going toward Pidgeon.

Not sure who gave you the 'mixed reviews' . . . if so, they're fishing in the wrong places.  That's not just a Forest Co. phenomenon however.  ANY of the NW/NC PA streams will have fish in them if you're willing to walk a little and 'experiment'.  For whatever reason (I think it might be PH levels but can't confirm), you can go 1/2 mile w/o a fish and then run into a stretch where it seems the stocking truck stopped and nobody got the memo.

Best 'put 'n take' season streams IMO are Millstone, Tom's Run, and Salmon Ck.

If you like to walk/take in scenery, you won't go wrong heading off the beaten path on Spring, Salmon, or Maple.  Buy a topo map or 'PA Gazeteer', and pick a spot where the Ck. goes away from the road for a 1/2 mile or so.  Walk it any time but the true 'dog days' of July and August (esp. if it's a dry summer), and you'll catch fish.

Keep going north, just about every stream in McKean Co.  is HQ or EV.

Thanks for the advice.  I really appreciate all the input.  I prefer to fish off the beaten path.  My camp is about 3 minutes from a stretch of Maple Creek so I plan on fishing that creek a good bit.  My family had a camp in Sinnemahoning and I still make it up that way every once in awhile so I am more familiar with the Cameron and Potter County streams.  But with everyones input I should become familiar with Forest County pretty quickly.  I have heard that the Native trout population is pretty scarce and I wasn't sure if anyone could confirm that or not.  Thanks again for your help.

I fished the stretch of Coon creek for about a mile from where Golzinga road crosses it by the rifle range.  Beautiful stretch of creek with plenty of runs and good pools.  The one thing it lacked was fish.  Couldn't buy a strike.  I figured I may have missed the stockers, but I was surprised to not get any natives.  Musta been doing something wrong.

If I stop at Rays, it's usually on the way up to camp, so I'm there in the afternoon, and it's pretty quiet.  I'll have to figure out a way to get there on a saturday night.

Bolimj,  There are some natives around.  not as many as before.  Some of the streams I know they are in were almost dried up last year.  I am sure that hurts them.  I only know the native streams around the 62/666 area.  Again you have my email.  I will send them to ya if you want them.

Danesdad,  The section of coon you fished get hit hard.  Coon gets alot of fish stocked in it.  That IMO hurts the natives.  Head up stream following the game commision acess rd.  You will like the walk and the amount of fish in the stream.

Years ago (10 or so?, geez, it's been that long, anyway...) I fished Maple once.  And on it there was the most impressive network of beaverdams I've ever seen.  wing dams, archs, weirs, channels, absolutely amazing.  The whole valley was essentially clearcut by beavers, and the trees stripped of the branches, for maybe 1/4 - 1/2 mile.  And there were trout there too.
