Thanks Clint for the walkabout. I'd imagine anything swimming and large enough to target got picked pretty good.
Know it's not what we want to hear from the stream aspect but lake guys are hammering Chinook. Like hammering them far better then any recent years in a very long time and last year was considered banner both boat and shore !!
Won't be long, hope everyone and everything plays nice .. fish on

DSR reporting huge number in lower stretch and many fish in the upper....sounds like the "run" is on! Now we need a cool shot of temps.

With all this stuff going on here , my time off from work might have to be spent doing chores instead of fishing.
Next week will be very busy.
October is looking better for me now

Sounding like the beginning of the beginning is over and the annual festivities may be starting.
Congrats to those lucky folks fishing low today- you appear to be in for quite a memory.

Report from DSR is that the lower stretch is "crammed" with fish and the river patrol in a boat states that the boat is rocking from the fish moving!!!

My Mom is slowly fading after we took care of her over the spring and  summer. She made it to 99, but now is in a hospice. Not only did we care for her, but we had an F2 tornado that caused my work schedule to go over 70 hrs. a week for  months.  The least I've fished  in my memory. I had to pass on huge stripers that were shallow and eating flies sight fished. My buddy kept sending me pics of 30-40 lb. fish for almost 2 weeks.  I'll probably miss salmon season, too.  I'm trying for a suicide run, even though I made reservations weeks ago, but it's out of my hands. I'm tired.  Good luck out there.

You build a huge store of good Karma.  We'll keep your mother and you in our prayers here.  Fishing is so totally unimportant in comparison to the life you are living now.

Charlie I'm saddened to hear and my thoughts are with you and family.
The nice read is of time you took to help ease the transition , someone alone is a terrible thing.
Be well brother.

Thanks to all with much appreciation. Some of you I only know from posts, some I share memories and great, great times on the water with.  Social media is sometimes empty, and causes friction and dissent where none need be. This ain't one of those places.     In  the future, I'm hoping for a return  of steelhead in enough numbers to warrant  some  winter forays.  My work schedule is now normal and I'm due some time off.  This post reminded me of the past for some reason and some people I haven't fished with in far too long.  Don't take family for granted, nor your friends. They make life the blessing that it is.
Jack, I know where to find you, and where you're staying. Hope to see you.  The miracle of modern technology might let me get away. Does anyone know the closest cell signal to the upper?

Cell is hit or miss up there. At my house in Richland it was out in the backyard and good in the front.
Always had issues around Tressel but OK at Altmar bridge.

Got up to Cannons about mid afternoon, had a look around the river and it is mobbed with people. After we got some food went back to the room and just did n't feel like putting all the stuff on that I think I need to fish and decided to just sight see along the river.I saw a couple hook ups on the LFZ and watched a bunch of clowns trying to snag some at Pineville. When the Sun dropped it really cooled off so went back to room,Tomorrow I wil get serious about this.

NO cell service upriver from at least Tressel.
Got in and went directly to Upper Fly lot to check for you -nothing --then tried all the way down at the lots to tressel-Nothing.
Downriver- all OK

Haven't seen anything to support the 'larger' fish this year or the 'larger' run either.
Hope all the early reported Lake indicators are true and its still coming.
So far there are fish- but nothing to write home about.
On the flip side have been up last week of Sept for years- sometimes IT has already happened but mostly ( I think) its yet to happen.
When I was up last week saw NO indications of a spawn starting so may think its yet to come- or just a drip drip  drip season.

Re: fun stuff 2018/10/01 11:33:36 (permalink)
A lot of the Charter Operators are talking about a banner year class of two year olds that will spawn next year and a poor class of three year olds spawning this year.  I want to see the data from the hatchery on age and condition of whatever returns.  I am thinking it is late, a lot of the berries were late, I've never seen black raspberries in August still lingering, I had fireflies at my house in Rochester two weeks ago, they are usually gone in July, it has been in the 80's and the local temperatures have only dropped into temperatures conducive to a king run in the Genesee in the last couple of days, and the pier fishers were still hitting them last week, also late in relation to the "normal" run.  This coming weekend is the "Early" Columbus Day weekend, but I would say it is two weeks until the " usual" peak.  I have not bothered with the circus at the east end, but 2B has been up and said there was quite a slaughter going on in town, so if you stayed up river, a whole lot of the fish you would expect to see took "side roads to the south and east."   I would actually go and try for some of the trout reported to be coming in, but I have been tapped to help out at the clothing center where I volunteer, and there are the meetings next week.  Plus it is still too crowded for me, unless a lot of the guys with reservations from last year are stiffing the lodge owners, I've seen that one happen when there are a lot of fish in close in LI sound and the Atlantic off NYC and NJ, and that's what I'm hearing from friends down there.  So maybe I'll be at the Rochester Meeting on Tuesday, and then go to the Pulaski one Wednesday next week, if it is too crowded on the river, the trout season is still open upstream until the 15th.

Agreed with most of what you advise.
As I prefer to fish way upriver the Town slaughter is  always taken into consideration when judging the run though.
When the town snagging has huge impact  and night runners aren't coming up I tend to feel the run either hasn't really got up to speed or its not that impressive.
Am gonna fish anyhow, just adjust expectations.
A drought year can do that upriver but there is nice flow now.
Those 'biggest Kings ever' and' a really impressive run' early lake stories are kinda typical so I don't pay too much attention.
Yes- they have been true before- but seem to happen too much.lol

OK  -fun stuff again
Couple of Winters back my neighbors aggressive white Rooster ended up in my garage after a deep snowfall.
He used to show up begging treats now and then.
After snow blowing the drive and walks he stayed at my place for a couple of weeks eating bread and bird seed I gave him. Also made up a nice bed of hay in the garage because he pooped all over my wife's car when sleeping on it.
He got in the habit of coming to the kitchen window each AM and sometimes  during the day crowing his brains out looking for me to open the window and throw out food.
Did that every day, also commonly came up on the porch and crowed loudly at the kitchen door a couple of times a day.
He was fun to have around and I enjoyed his antics.
Well the snow melted and one day I saw his tracks going back next door-
Never saw him again for days.

Asked the neighbor what happened to the Rooster- said the darned thing came to his bedroom window crowing his brains out every morning waking his wife and himself. He didn't know why.
Stuck a .22 out the window one AM- and -no more Mr Rooster.

NOT getting political on this thread but --gotta say it was heartwarming to see so many  help wanted signs along the roads( truck drivers in particular) while traveling up to SR country on the back routs a couple of weeks ago.
In an area I truly enjoy on many levels it was really good to see what indicated to me as an upsurge in economics.
The area really needs that.

Sailing the concrete oceans and the asphalt seas, has been fun for me. Rolling vs parked has always been an indicator, of the economy.

Fun stuff, big trucks bring it... 10-4?🎃
