If, and I mean IF PR's accepted such a fish in trade, I assure you that it would be discarded. They always have a few extras ( donated by friends ) for tasters, and cases such as this.

Does anyone have any idea how many fish run the streams, and never make it back to being healthy enough to run again the following season?

Deer, the best estimates I've read suggest less than 20% make it another year.
those that don't get roped, get beat day in and day out by all of us.
if that's not tough enough on 'em,
Add in the rigors of spawning in shallow hard bottom creeks  w/sharp shale gravel, and it all takes it toll.
I won't even mention what can happen when the ice flows break up.
(Some years it's amazing they ALL don't get ground up into fish paddies)

as i undestand it, the few that survive the guantlet to drop back to lake, die in the lake.

........................................................................

i haven't a clue what caused the wounds on the fish.
whether natural like ice, sharp shale, etc or predators like man, bird, coon, etc.
I'd "guess" the lower lip is a genetic/birth defect

Looks a lot like talons to me......I would be more inclined to guess Osprey, but I have never seen many up there and PGC does not list it as one of thier known nesting areas.  Anyone else ever seen one?

AT 20 MILE LAST DEC. MY BROTHER AND I SAW AN OSPREY DIVE DOWN AND CATCH A STEELHEAD. FLYING BACK UP HE DROPPED IT. GUESS IT WAS TOO HEAVY.   GLEN

I would guess talons.  And about an eagle not being able to carry a 6 pound fish...thats how he managed to excape to be caught again.

why has nobody even said a great blue heron we have a ton of them around the streams. and they are big enough to cause that kind of damge for sure..back in th early 90's i had some cohos on a stringer and had walk upstream a bit to check the next poolcame back and one of them have a huge fresh hole just put in it by a heron..

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.
