Anyone on the ice?

Just curious if anyone has found safe hard water. I know, all are afraid of letting out secrets.

Not so Sparrow, it's not that we are afraid of letting out secretes, we're just afraid of being the first to test the ice.

Just talking about Pymie on another thread buddy,  ice is  a making but it, just got blanketed with snow in the area.  Hopefully the high wind kept the lake blown clean of any accumulation so the ice keeps on a crackin'.

We are all standing by for further developments and updated reports from Crappie_Slayer..... stay tuned.

My local creeks are starting to freeze in deeper slack-water areas and I'm hoping to hit the banks within the next week or two. A shovel or something to break the ice apart and then toss some crawlers (if I can find any) in for suckers and holdover stockies in the only area with a liquid surface. Not quite ice fishing, but I don't think we're going to have any safe ice with the way this winter is looking.

Friday forecast for my little piece of Penn's Woods including Pymatuning, Wilhelm, Conneaut, Sandy Lake, Shenango and all area beaver ponds.

Cloudy in the morning, then off and on rain showers during the afternoon hours. High 44F. Winds S at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 40%.  A steady light rain early transitioning to showers of rain and snow later at night. Low 31F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 80%. ~ The Weather Channel Dudes.

A mixture of snow, rain and, more snow could make for some crunchy tip toeing on the ice.

Ahh, just throw some big rocks at it and see if it breaks, if it doesn't then you're good to go :)

3 inches to 4 in some spots at muddy creek with warmer temps and rain this weekend it will be next week for me for sure. a few dink gills and perch aren't worth it. Golden run has 2 inches by next week should be good to go. Now if ther were 5 to 10 lb walleyes biting I might just consider tempting fate MIGHT LOL.

Dive master, you sound like you would be interesting to sit with, on the ice, and have some good conversation.  Maybe we can get together in the very near future and try some catching through the ice.

To show what kind a guy I am, I'll let you have the front of the boat (so to speak) and pick the first spots.

PS.  You may borrow my spud bar if you like.
PSS. You might want to bring some diving gear or at least a wet suit and your mae west.

Well here's my unofficial report for my area. Conneaut lake is pretty much wide open, the wind earlier in the week didn't help at all.

Stopped at Tuttle, Manning, and Snodgrass out at pymy. Saw a few others driving around checking the lake out. Didn't venture out very far, as I have already taken the plunge before and didn't feel like getting wet today. All stops were the same. 1-2 hits with the spud bar and then the bottom of the lake. Ice measurement 15 or so yds off the shoreline was about 2" (by hand) of soft ice. I'm gonna give it another week at least.

Lol. Never fished Arthur, but then again I don't fish for bass. Next week is definitely looking better for making ice on my local lakes.

let me tell you about my lake Arthur experience....

Parked at the bridge, walked to the right , about 200 yards out. CRACK down I go. Well this sucks, dad yells ... Well dumb me, changes my clothes can't feel my fingers.. "Dad we drove out here we are fishing"

Well lets go towards the left into the cove... Fished all day caught  1 4" bluegill... Been there a few other times all sucked.

Now I go to deepcreek every weekend. 15" perch and crappie ... 15" + walleye....  Big pike and pickerel... 13" bluegills...

Deep creek, fish sizes are believable but, I've fished a few puddles, from northern Quebec to Georgia, and caught brim in the south and bulls of the north and never caught a northern gill over 10.25 inches and a southern fish over 11.50. I'd love to see a 13 inch 2 lb gill, any pics with a tape on them?

the 15 inch perch and crappie are believable but 13 in gills Really!!! Presque isle in erie produces some real bulls but ive never seen one that big.11 yes but 13 .it would take that many years for that fish to get that big esp in an inland lake.

Went to Northmoreland Park in Westmoreland County yesterday to check on the ice.
Still some open water from the boathouse down to the dam.  Drilled two holes off of the handicap dock = 2" of soft ice.

Sounds like a plan, I've never actually been true ice fishing, so far just fished in open pockets around ice from shore in creeks, etc. Where do you ice fish at most of the time, Pyme? Unfortunately, I don't have a functional dry suit at the moment otherwise I'd be up for a dive or two at Arthur, however my insane friend has been happily wreck diving in PIB the last few weeks.

Good deal, now if we get some good solid ice.  Pymie will be my go to lake for this year as my old favorite, Lake Wilhelm, hasn't been doing real well for me.  I know Wilhelm holds some good fish but, they ain't in my old hot spots and I'm too danged old to be trekking on the ice trying to find em.  I did mark a couple of good spots fishing Pymie this summer that I want to try when ice permits.  Now if I can just find the coordinates I wrote down.

Weather wise, I'd be surprised if the ice isn't ready mid week.  I just prefer to let somebody else test it 'cause I'm just that kind of guy.

BTDT,you think the docks are deep enough to ice fish. The fish where there late. I'd say they would be there now.

Tuna, keep this under your hat,  I hear guys are or, were breaking the ice from the docks and catching some good fish.  The ice around the docks I would think, be a bit thinner then the open areas.  Gonna hit the road to Pymie at mid week and check it out first hand.  I think this cold snap may just do the trick and any snow will insulate the ice from the warmer  weather forecast for the end of the month.
