It definitely said nursery water in the article so one would think it's the big private side. They do have some huge fish on that private side of the lake that are used for breeding stock. I've witnessed them bringing captured fish into the hatchery for milking and they bring in some hogs ! They really have a nice setup for transferring those fish from boat to tanks. I think that display tank is a cool thing to witness since fish are changed out steady. I use to take my kids up all the time and see what kind of fish were on display. The fish always appeared healthy everytime we were there, and I'm not sure but I don't think they leave them in long before they swap them around. When you can keep big Trout in that tank healthy looking I'd say the rest should have no problem.

I also agree over handling of fish does stress them bad and could jeopardize their health. So yea maybe special trophy fish like that should be left alone soon as possible.

One question I have had is how do they control the huge Carp numbers on that side ?

Yep, definitely said nursery waters. From the pic it looks to be in the corner by the hatchery down from the spillway where they put the net every year.

I've heard that rumor, but also heard it's false too. Just seems like too many Carp multiplying would ruin the eco system after so much time. Maybe someone will have a true input as to what takes place with thousands of Carp and how they control the numbers somewhat year after year.

You would think the mass waste being put out would jeopardize other fish below the Spillway flow into the lake. I've never heard of any problems over the years, but haven't hatcheries closed because of fish waste discharge being too high ?

I found some info. I would Google it if you want the answer or ask Fish and Boat. That way it shouldn't be a rumor but maybe could be.

This is Probally common knowledge but didn't they want to do away with feeding them bread because the yeast was encouraging algae growth?

I'll try to find some information to back my claim.

Whenever we have visitors from down state or other parts of the country, one of the first places they want to go is where the ducks walk on the backs of fish. Apparently Pymatuning is a well known attraction throughout the country...

But how does feeding bread to carp at Pymatuning cause toxic algae blooms on Lake Erie???

I betcha, it's all them

Dog and I got our drift on again this afternoon for a few. One short eye, one cat and a perch. Missed a few good hits that I didn't let them take long enough. The few fish I got were out a little deeper than earlier in the week with the cooler weather.

Them linesville carp remind me of a way to prepared catfish in the Ohio river. Preheat oven to 350, clean fish, stuff with lemons, thyme, heads of garlic and a good drizzle of olive oil. Bake for 30 mins or fork tender. Throw away fish and eat cedar plank!

Crappie Slayer .... Question     Is your dog a "pointer" or "retriever"?  I may have to get a dog to add to my Walleye arsenal. Along with Gulp Minnows, floating head jigs, Mister Twister Tails, ect. ect. ect.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hahaha...she's definitely a retriever. Don't think I even need the net as she watches me set the hook, and then tries to grab every fish when I get it to the boat. Can be kind of a pain, but she likes to go out in the boat. One of these days the puppy stage will tone down :)

That's over near Kennerdale. Freedom Falls is what they call it. First time there for me. Near the bike trails they ride from there to Oil City big RR tunnel there also.

Capt, I thought that was the "Rockland Furnace" and "Freedom Falls".   Been through or past the old RR tunnel, you mention, canoeing/jet boating the Allegheny or riding the the old rails.  Literally riding the old rails, we would line our cars up on the rails at Eighth Street in Franklin and ride to Kennerdale or Oil City.  Spent many a spring or fall day back in the mid sixties and early 70's putting out wild fires set by trains along those rails.  Man those were the days........

Did ya happen to see "Indian God Rock" along the bike trail?

Ummmm sorry about getting away from the thread..... dam emotions, anyway.

Great pictures, thanks for the memories!

You have a good back round on all that. I haven't hit the bike trail maybe some day , but it sure is a nice area to see and visit. I use to fish along that stretch of the Allegheny many years ago when the trains ran those rails.

Another dead night on Pymy last night, colder again, water was fairly calm with a light North wind. Not many boats out and so far a very challenging season for night bite Walleye.

Fished Pymatuning for the first time in probably 30 years this weekend.  We started Friday night fishing the spillway.  Snagged some carp and caught a cat.  Hit a few more spots and quit about 11.  Saturday morning fished stumpfield and several spots around there.  No walleye, just perch and cats.  Sunday we went out of Snodgrass to fish where I used to crush them and caught one perch.  Used sonars, fatheads, crawlers, hot-n-tots, jigs and even tried some rubber worms for bass around some lily pads.  Talked to quite a few people and only one person caught a short walleye.  All I can say is this lake is not what it used to be.

Hey Brock that's a great pic of the falls. Years ago I used to spend a lot of time up Rockland just above Kennerdale. We swam in that hole below the falls often man was that water cold. Jump in on a 90 degree day and it still took your breath away. Down over the hill from her camp on the river is a nice little back channel behind an island that was a great spot for SM and walleye. Haven't been there in years but I'm sure it is still good.

Re: PYMATUNING FISHING REPORT 2017/04/24 11:11:39 (permalink)
A quick story about that old furnace. Years ago there was a tree growing on top where the stump is now. So my friend decided to climb up there and gets to the top and reaches for a branch to pull himself up and it breaks and he falls backwards and lands in between a big rock and this piece of root or something that was sticking straight up like a spear. That spot on the ground seemed like it was made for his body. The dude layed there for a few seconds and jumped up like nothing happened. Someone was watching over him that day.

Fished pymy Sunday 9am to 3pm....caught 4 catfish, 3 perch...not a single eye...did manage to get 10 nice sized crappie and threw back a few under 9 so at least it wasn't a total waste...very little wind, cold front or too early not sure...keep trying...bound to pick up...caught crappie at 10 ft in 13 fow thought they would have been shallower..water was 57 at 9am up to 62 at 3pm. but I was fishing offshore structure, never went into the shallows. Good luck everyone.
