WALLEYE RELEASES

I have experimented with several different kind of releases and have yet to find any consistancy. I really like to use rubber bands (as I can see them stretch out with a strike), but I have a bad time getting them to break. I have tried several different kinds and they just won't break. Saturday I was dragging two nice walleye (for God knows how long) and the bands didn't break. I bought clip releases, which either won't release (if I set the line too deep) or release without being hit (if set too light). Bought a new set of releases (long and thin clips) and they don't seem to work much better.  I know there is a lot of experience out there, what are you guys using on the boards for releases?

A guy I used to fish with would buy rubber bands and leave them on the dash of his car to dry rot. Once they became a little dried out, they were very easy to break and worked perfectly.

    Unbreakable rubber bands...

What really bothers me is that they will break just out of arms reach. I have the same problem, have thought about putting a nick in the rubber band to give it a weak spot. Also thought about using rigger releases... But, hey, as long as they're catching fish I won't beech too much...

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

How hard do your boards pull? If your boards do not pull hard enough you will have enough give in your planer line that releasing can be tough sometimes. I had a lot better luck with the clips than the rubber bands, but the last two weekends i couldnt get the clips to release on some of the smaller fish.

Problem solved. Picked up a package of #16 rubberbands (as recommended on this site) and tried them lastnight. They worked very well. Was able to break them off the board line with a couple of jerks and one broke on a walleye hit. Will stay with the #16 bands forever. I use them in combination with the white plastic shower curtain loops (which are very visable). They are fast and easy to use. Thanks for the advise everyone.
