buying a boat

just looking for some of you experienced guys to chime in.  I am about to purchase a nice sylvan 22ft boat.  It has outboards on it and has the works.  Problem is the person is selling for her grandfather who is in the hospital.  I wanted to take the boat for a test ride to make sure everything works.  Problem, the registration expired 2yrs ago and she doesnt want to take it out because of that.  She told me that they had both engines running on muffs and i could hear it that way.  what would you do?

Be very careful. Wait until you can take the boat out for a test ride. Just because water is running thru the muffs doesn't mean the motors are alright. Have them checked by a pro at a marina boat shop before investing in the sale. I hope everything works out for you. Thats a good size boat.

A boat that size should be in the water for a test... or have an inspection done on it at the least.  No way of knowing if there are any leaks, do the bilge pumps work? Engine power?  Can it plane like it should or does it lug (indicating water being held in the foam, possibly another leak issue)
Too many variables/possible problems... even if it is inexpensive to purchase it could end up costing a small fortune to fix up problems.
Also... check the RPMs at WOT to see if the range is right for the motor (you should be able to get some base info on any outboard by searching forums on that brand of motor) and run the motor till it is fully warmed up to make sure how it behaves on something other than a few minute run.
Good luck and hope it works out for you!

I have bought many boats in my life and I never took a test drive in any of them. I look it over real good and run it on muffs & check the transom and floor real good. I bought one with a blown 350, so I didn't have to test that one

My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!

Price would answer a lot of questions. You could check compression easy enough, that would tell you a lot about the motors. Always check under the hood, discolored paint is bad news. You can expect to have to do some maintenance things like changing impellers and gear oil. I would check the transom and any wood in the boat closely. Grab the motors by the leg and lift hard, if there is flex in the transom that's not a good thing. For the right price things can be fixed...

Well i didnt end up buying the boat.  There was something fishy about the way they were acting once i asked to test drive the boat.  They said that i couldnt because the registration was expired and they were not going to renew it.  I offered to pay for the renewal just so i could test drive the boat and they told me i was becoming unreasonable.  Red flags went up seriously at that point.

Agree, it sounds awful fishy. I'll repeat what may be the best buying advice I've ever given "remember, you don't NEED a boat" take your time, a good one will come your way. What type and size is your preference?

i am looking for a Starcraft or a Sylvan something about 22 ft with outboard i like the ones from the mid 80's and they seem to be in my price range.   I have another one  that i am going to look at on Monday and the guy said we can take it for a ride without me even asking so we will see.  I am not in to much of a hurry but i would like to have a boat to target erie eyes this year.

Hey Karen, I prefer to look at it as helping out fellow fiserfolks...

There seems to be a lot of those on the market, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a nice one. You will find loose or missing rivets on almost any aluminum boat that age, but they are a relatively easy fix. Replacing the transom would be a PIA, but I have done it and after it's over it wasn't all that bad...

I have been keeping my eyes open for you, and I've seen some this weekend that might be what you're looking for.  However, I'm not sure if you're looking for a boat with an open floorplan like a tournament boat that you could fish inland lakes with (like a Lund baron or Crestliner Sportfish), or more of a Erie only boat with a closed bow/cuddy (like a Starcraft Islander or Lund Genmar)?  Also, what is your target price range?

I bought a 22ft sylvan this spring and so far I love it, it has a open floor plan which makes it real nice, plus I can hunt out of it this fall.
