These are nasty little critters because of their peculiar life cycle. I learned a lot about them from this link: http://www.metapathogen.com/tick/

It's best if you know the enemy -- hope this helps for all concerned. This is a timely topic that benefits everybody and there's been a lot of good information already presented.

PA brought in lady bugs (not getting technical) to eat the gypsy moth larva. they brought in fishers to eat the porcupines. maybe they should bring in deer so the abundance of ticks have a place to home.

What horror stories.....can't stand those little buggers. I always feel so paranoid that they're all over me while I'm out there.

I heard a dab of petroleum jelly will make them back out or suffocate them!

And before it backs out it will vomit whatever toxins it may be carrying into your blood stream.  Heat and any other substance that "forces" a tick back out will have the same effect.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the preferred method is to use tweezers to grab as close to the head as possible and slowly pull it straight out.

yeah so your tweezers can squeeze whatever toxins it may be carrying into your blood stream instead of it just vomiting it into the stream.

The string method seems to be pretty good.

Yes, of course one could never apply common sense to recognize that squeezing the chit of the tick differs from a firm grasp near the head of the tick

But hey, what the heck would those stupid doctors know anyhow...

heyiknowyou the string tick looks slick might have to try that one next time the need arises. But I must say the suggested clips that came after that one made my stumach turn.....

No one ever said to squeeze the tick by the middle of the body, it actually says in here specifically not to do that and grab as close to the head as possible. I guarantee you that 90% of the time if you go to the hospital with a tick embedded in your skin, they are going to pluck it out with tweezers by grabbing it as close to the head as possible. Then they will probably do as many lab tests on it as possible to get all the dollars they can out of your insurance.

I would trust what the Mayo Clinic has to say over a you tube doctor (It's one of the top rated hospitals in the country):

clarion hosp. and the doctor offices don't do a lymes disease test around here if the tick was removed within the first 24 hours. after that they have the patient watch for the first symptoms and treat it then. the test is a drawn out process what i understand.
the dr. said out west, though there are lots of ticks out there, lyme disease is uncommon and very rairly gets tested.

I took a tick into the hospital that I pulled out myself once several years ago, told them it was a deer tick, and I was worried because the head broke off under my skin. I thought they might test the tick for lymes disease or want to dig the head out, which is why I went in. Well they sent it to a lab, and charged my insurance like $300 dollars just to identify it as a deer tick, with no testing for lymes disease. Which I already knew and told them it was when I brought it in.

I'll never go to the hospital again for a tick bite, unless I start seeing the bulls-eye rings. The family practice doctor knew nothing about ticks or if the head needed to be extracted (it doesn't), and I was able to find more relevant information from notable sources on the internet by myself.
