Winter Holding Lies:

Anyone have any tips or tactics to find/catch winter steelhead.  I did real well when the temps were up in the fall, but they're killing me with this cold weather.  So...how do I catch 'em this time of year?  Thanks

go a little lower and a little slower. If you fished the very heads ad fast tailouts of the pools, move toward the center of the pool and find a current break on the bottom. live minnows are tough to beat this time of year, but since we're on the fly forum I assume you're using a fly rod. Indi nymphing with small flies has always been my best fly bet this time of year. Tiny (18 or 20) apricot sucker spawn, sometimes with some flash are one of my standard flies. Black stones are also pretty standard fare this time of year.

    thanks

Yeah, I'm using the long rod.  Alright, slow, small, and deep.  I've seen guys doing really well with small beadhead PT's and princes.  Are you still using a floating line?  If we're thinking of the same type of water...some of these pools are deep.  Thanks

A floating line will be fine.  I haven't seen much, if any, water in the erie tribs that require a sinking line.

Even in cold water I go with water clarity to determine color/size of my flies.

yeah, like slate drake said. Floating lines are fine. There isn't a place in the PA tribs where you need to fish a sinking line. There aren't many places where you CAN fish a sinking line (more effectively than a floater).

Small PT's are fine, they are pretty close to a tiny black stone nymph and they hit a generic mayfly profile. I've never been a prince nymph fan, as effective as some may find them. I do tie a fly that is similar though with the doubled up goose biots.

    thanks

transam, your weight forward line might and probaly is a floating line. if you got the box it came in the lines are designated as wf8f meaning. weight forward, 8wt, floating. if it were a sinking line it would read like, wf8I or wf8s which is weight forward, 8weight intermediate sink or S meaning sinking line. hope this helps.

for a better presentation you might need to mend your line upstream to make sure your fly gets to the fish before your tippet/leader does. try starting, making sure you're dragging the bottom, than work your way a little up from there.
