i have no experience with this set up but i did hear some good things about the rod, nothing on the reel. most reels can be converted to right or left hand by flipping the bearing.

Try cabelas, should be able to get a LST rod &prestige reel for less than $200.Guarentee for 25 years, and no problum's returning if you break it.I've broke mine twice and taken it back and walked out with a new rod for free.

Transam what line weight and such are you getting? Stay away from cabelas thier rods are decent but the reels are GARBAGE. I own an LST in a 7 wt I like it alot. its a good rod for the price. As far as the reel goes, I wouldn't reccomend giving that reel away to your worst enemy.

loomis, im thinkin about a 4wt for the somerset, fayette and laurel highlands area, i also have an 8wt for the yough and erie, but want something smaller for the little streams, also shorter like 7' 6" cuz i keep have my rod gettin caught in trees. what do combos do you recommend, not looking to the break the bank either though? The 8wt is a guide series i think its gander mountain brand. It came with everything on it and only was $50, couldnt pass that up.

In my opinion, go for it. It's not so expensive ...that, being a greenhorn as you say, and you don't like it, ...no big deal. yet...it is of good enough quality that it won't hamper your experience. I bought a few Redington's when I first started and I still use em.

yeah Trans, that combo in a 7'6'' in a 3 or 4 wt will be okay redington is good stuff, so is TFO, and Cabelas RODS just not the reels. what I use is a 8'6" 5 wt to handle some of the bigger ditches but u gotta be precise on the small ones. 7'6'' 4 wt is what I started with, it did me just fine. This will handle any stream around the laurel mountains where we fish at and u'll love it for small streams like Dunbar. Once u get better with ur casting and better overall as a fly fisherman then maybe make the jump to a bigger rod and different line weight. Happy Holidays!

Trans Am, My opinion: Good Choice! I ALWAYS tell people to start out inexpensively and then work up. Or in my case just stay where you are. As for the reels. Really how good does a reel for small streams have to be? You don't need a drag, you don't need multiple bearings and you don't need flash. (reflected light will put a wild trout "down" in a hurry). All you need is some way to get the line in, and out. Now if the reel falls apart that is different; but what is the function. When I fish most small streams most of my line is gathered in my hand and I rarely reel the line in. Just think about it!
