870 is probably the most reliable shotgun IMO..I own 2 of them.

Are the new ones any good?
Mine is probably 30 years old

Anyone ever shoot one of those H/R single shot 10 gauges.

I just sold mine last year. It spent most of it's time in the corner once the Ithaca 10 ga mag came out. It still hammers me but that H/R was brutal. The biggest problem with the Ithaca is it's weight at 11-1/2 pounds loaded. They would both dump a turkey at long range though. Toyed with getting one of the new 12 ga but as the wife says they don't increase the number you can get just because you get a new gun.

Glad  to hear I'm not alone with the Mossberg junker -was startin to think I was doing something wrong--besides buying it -when I was in the store looking for a 3" 870 in the first place. That camo pattern swayed my opinion and I have lived to regret it.
Got 2 870s home and my boys have them too. Never a problem in years and years of use.

Most people can handle up to 22 foot/pounds of recoil without flinching due to pain. My 7mm Rem mag dished out around 19 foot/lbs and it was fine....Then I shot my cousins 300 Win Mag rated at around 28 foot/lbs....I handed it back to him saying I will never shoot that gun again.

I guess you wouldn't fare too well with a slug gun then.  An 8# gun with 2 3/4" slugs would put you in the neighborhood of 32-35 ft/lbs.  You could be an idiot and try the 3" slugs like I did and the recoil bumps up to around 45 ft/lbs.  After a box of the 3" slugs I learned my lesson...

Had an 835 Ulti-mag for a little while. Tried to pattern it in with a couple different loads. Those 3 1/2" shells were the end of me shooting that beast..Ouch.....

The following are taken from various sources including the recoil nomograph in the Handloader's Digest 8th Edition, the online recoil calculator at Big Game Info (http://www.biggameinfo.com/RecoilCalc.asp), the Remington Shoot! program or calculated from the formula given in the Lyman Reloading Handbook, 43rd Edition.

Gunsmith told me its something bout the design on the Mossberg bolt- allows far too much debris to get in behind it and jams it up. Probably alright in just the canoe or a clean blind but for guys like me who get out in the 'stuff' and move around it doesnt seem to last.
Been using the 870 for over 40 yrs without a single issue -same places -same kinda hunting- and more..--different strokes.

Mossberg came out with their pump for the guys that couldn't afford the Rem 870 or Win 12. It was never meant to compete with them, and never did. It was always, and still is the price leader in the market.

I'm also a young buck. I have a 30/30 and an 870. The marlin is ok, looking to upgrade. The 870 is rock solid. I'm in the field in early September. I quit about mid January or whenever the bay locks up with ice. Swamps, hills, dales, and the nastiest cover you've ever seen. I clean my shotgun twice a year, once in august and once in January. It always goes bang.

A buddy of mine offered to give me an 835 for free. I said sure (its a free gun. what am I, stupid?) Long story short, the gun is sitting in his safe right now. It didn't even make it to the field. It just felt cheap and sloppy.

I hunt with my 870 wingmaster for everything. I've NEVER had a problem with it, even in the coldest and nastiest weather. I had a buddy change shot-guns 3 times because he couldnt keep up to that gun. I can dam near get 3 rounds out of it as fast as them fellas wit dere semi's.

I have a 500 12 gauge with a cantilever bbl.  I have put that gun through heck over the 8 years I owned and it has never let me down.  It is not the prettiest gun, nor does it have the tightest action, but it shoots accurately and has always been reliable.

I grew up shooting an 870 and I could say the same thing about it as I said about the 500 above.

If money was no object, I would buy myself a new Ithaca Deerslayer.

Yeah,
I won't shoot 3" slugs out of my 500 either. I learned my lesson after a box. They are a lot less accurate than the 2.75" too (unless it was just my wussie arse flinching so bad at the thought of the next round of punishment).

Either way, I still like to kill my deer when its warm, with an arrah, and its up close and personal so hopefully I won't have to ever break it out again...

You havent LIVED till your out in a brush covered canoe in a Northern Maine bog where ya went via-'carry the canoe in' way and the Ducks come in and your first shot jams the action so bad ya have to use your backup gun the rest of the trip cause it needs pro-help to fix.
BTW- that 'backup' gun is back in camp 15 miles away and ya have to sit and say 'nice shot' all afternoon and evening  to the buys who have good guns.
Still cant believe that gun isnt down deep where the canoe was parked in that bog.

Thunderdik...
Trust me when I say I have wore out more pairs of upland boots than oreos you've eaten. I've cycled at least 10,000 rounds through my vintage 1971 Wingmaster, maybe 8000 of them before you were conceived. I have but one complaint about my 1st 870, the blueing wore off where I carry it. There is a good article about this legendary firearm in the current(maybe last month) issue of American Rifleman. BTW, no need to clean an 870 unless you are fixxin' to sell it.

870 is probably the most reliable shotgun IMO..I own 2 of them.

Are the new ones any good?
Mine is probably 30 years old

The one I have was handed down to me and is probably 40 yrs old (Wingmaster) The other one I bought a few years ago (Supermag). Both of them are rock solid guns.

Rem vs Mossberg both have their pro and cons. One thing I hate on a gun is PLASTIC such as the safe on the Mossberg. We could go on and on but the 870 has proven itself a winner for many years both in law enforcement and in the sporting world. Funny how the Mossberg's are always compared to the 870's. You get what you pay for.

Just havin some 'old time' fun with ya Thunder--Some day youl be here- think bout it...
Actually remember the day I bought my first 870-wayyyyyy back when in olden days- was standin there with an Ithaca Featherwieght and the 870 in front of me and took a lotta time making up my mind.
Still think I made the right choice  although friends had that Ithaca and  liked it.
On the PD they switched over to Mossberg cause of the  price and dumped  the old 870's. A Range instructor for the state actually laid up the 870's cause the little spring stop in the tube was missing. Guys had removed them cause if there ever was a jam the stop would take too long to play with. There was never a jam.
Bought a few of them and reconditioned them.

Thinking a gun is wonderful depends on your experience.
The first shotgun I hunted with was a bolt action 12ga, probably a Mossberg.
It was great till I shot an old Winchester pump.
It was great till I bought a Winchester 1300 12ga mag pump
That was great til I bought Winchester 1400 12ga mag semi auto
That was great til I bought a Remington 1100 12ga mag
That was great til I bought an 1187
That was great til I bought a Ruger Red Label sporting clays
Still love the Ruger even after buying a Perazzi.

Somewhere in that mix I bought a couple 870's, Ithacas, Street Sweepers and a few others .

My mind was made up. JCPenneys had a 28" modified for $115. They put it on sale for $105, me and my Dad made the move. Got a pair 8 serial #'s apart. He had a Mossberg, it quickly went up for sale for $60.
