Conneaut Creek

I am new to the NW Pennsylvania and interested in steelheading.  Can anybody tell anything about fishing the Conneaut Creek in the state gamelands?  I know this is way upstream but i have heard it can be good and not crowded.  Is spring a good time to go there?  What kinds of tackle work best there?  I never see much witten abou this creek and steelhead.  Thanks for your help

thats because its one of the last places in erie where you can find a parking space... I doubt anyone's going to give you info. you'll have to just go and try it on your own. It's what you would do if there was no internet anyway.

    Gravy,
I'm not being a smart@ss here but if you just do a serch of the recent posts on this forum you will find out a lot of info on Connie. Most folks are NOT going to give away specific info. because you are not the only person reading these posts and NOBODY is going to tell you real specific information like: Take state rod 1457 to the red barn turn right, follow the dirt road for 1/2 mile, pull in to the turn off under the big hemlock tree, walk down to the big rock by the cut bank, use a green sucker spawn fished 3' below a strike indicator with 1 small split shot 2 feet bove the fly. drift the fly about 2' out from the cut bank and let it drift to the foot of the pool.  NOBODY is going to give you that kind of information.

just got back from there. its loaded with steelheads. I caught about 137 steelies, a couple muskies and a bunch of assorted other species.
the only bad thing was a bunch of local kids showed up, pitchforks in hand. I don't know how many steelheads will escape the tines of death.

Gravy, I guess you got more than you bargained for! Gotta go and take your chances. get used to the replies like this on questions like that. As far as tackle, look under conventional or fly fishing and get a map and have at it. It's how many of us learned. Also it's much more rewarding if you find out on your own. Besides if one person knows a particular place thats producing, we all do. Good luck.  Dave

    Gravy,

You will find fish the length of the stream at any given time of the season. The size, and nature of it means that you will also find much different fishing than the other streams. You will not be able to sight fish to dozens of Steel in a small pool, or run. The main reason that it does not get the attention, or publicity of the other streams. The same gear, and baits apply, but you will need greater skill, and faith in your instincts rather than your eyes to find fish.

A good day on the connie is 4 or 5 hard earned fish. If you don't mind brush, steep banks, log jams, shards of metal, concrete, wire and every type of broken bottle on earth. Then it's not to bad. After 6 hours on the connie you will feel like a true fisherman.

Thanks for all of the info.  This was my first time on this site and I can understand some of the responses.  Good spots that aren't crowded are hard to come by. I look forward to giving it a try.  Thans again.

Go purchase a Gazeteer and look at every bridge that crosses conneaut. conneaut has a different river bottom in Pa than Ohio does. Do they still stock Tiger Muskies on conneaut? Every stretch of her has fish in it not as many fish down low, but well worth the walk/drive believe me!

    Gravy,
I would like to add some very good advice about the Connie,  be very careful about where you wade or try to access.  There are spots that get REAL DEEP, REAL FAST.  Couple that with steep banks  and some fast water and you can get in trouble quickly.  I speak from experience.  I once waded in too far and then had to try to buck the current to try to get back upstream.  I was lucky in that I had a friend on the bank who gave me a hand up or the Connie might still have an old, fat man standing in the middle of it.

connie can be a hard stream to fish, there are not as many fish to found compared to elk or the nut. this stream is  a gem and takes a whole new breed of fisherman to understand how to fish it. takes years to figure it out trust me on this one. I fish it all winter long.

Another reason it is not talked about much is that in some of the remote parking areas, well lets just say that there has been some cars broken into and the police do not do much about it.  Say they need more information or witnesses and such.  So be careful and do not take anything and leave it in your car if you can not afford to lose it to a thief.
