I fish a 9' 8wt XP up there. In fact I use it for Salt, Steel, Big Trout streamers, etc.. I also have a 4, 5 & 6 XP. Triangle taper lines match up darn good with them.

Salmo, the 8 wts. are standouts. I've tried alot of rods, as I've  worked in some flyshops, and have guide friends that are sponsored by different companys. The 8 wt. xp will stand with any 8 for a great big fish fighting  rod. They'll put a 350 gr. shooting head into orbit. I have a 5 and 9, too. DB's Rplx's were right in the ballpark.  I've gotta say, you guys have great taste in equipment.    I wonder if you can get a 10' 8 wt. in either line. Might be hard to find, but worth a look. Now I can't wait for the end of Aug.

I've got an 896 rplx I've been wanting to tie. Also got a 1090. If you're talking salt; this stick could probably haul with the best of them. Hey charlie; did i misunderstand you, or were you able to find rpl's for sale?

...looks like xp makes an 810 and also loomis makes a cross current 810. I imagine both are excellent. An 8 weight is an all around great rod for many species. Some say its too heavy for steel but I disagree. Especially if you go 10' or bigger.

DB, I found 810-4 xp's for sale new from the factory, no blanks (yet) and some used Rplx's . I have a great Winston BIIX 9 wt., too. I may just stick with the short rods for one season, unless I find a steal. Next month I'm spending 10 days in the Golden Trout Wilderness backpacking and chasing those weird yellow rainbows. I'll see what's left in the wallet when I come back from the Sierras.

I drove to lake tahoe from san francisco once. I believe that is sierras region??? Anyway; imo that is true gods country( no offense tuna :) unfortunately I was in the region for only 3 days and had no fly rod. It actually wouldn't of mattered since snow runoff was raging. I was there at the end of june so it sounds lime you should have good water levels in late july charlie; It was pretty effin cool to make a snow ball while getting sun burnt in 85 degree weather. Went cliff jumping at a beautiful spot that was far from civilization. Water was in the lower 40s and crystal clear. No trees anywhere. Gods country... enjoy brother

DB, you probably went over the Donner Pass (of cannibal fame) on 80. I went over it in a blizzard last April in a rented Prius with chains. It was an adventure.  Yep, that's the Sierras in the North portion. The GTW is south on 395 about 160 miles, above Lone Pine. I lived and worked there in the USFS when I was young and stupid (for ever leaving). Now I'm old and foolish, I go back almost every year. If you ever have any questions I can point you in the right direction, I've spent a ton of time there and still have friends in Ca.   The Sierras are God's country in every best sense of that phrase.  I'll post some pics when I get back.
