You'll smell a copperhead. About berry picking time here. I dislike snakes but my older relatives can't pick the berries and I love too. Still every year I gotta high step it out of somewhere when the cucumber smell gets real bad.

When I lived in Valley Cottage, NY I used to fish several of the small trout streams around Bear Mountain.  One day I noticed a stream running between the North/South lanes of the Palisades parkway.  I parked my car and climbed down into a nice deep pool over several rocky ledges.  After catching several small brookies and a nice rainbow I climbed back out of the area.
Spoke to the local DEC guy that patrolled Bear Mountain State Park and he said "Are you crazy???  That place is loaded with copperheads during July/August!".  Thus ended any future expeditions to that "secret spot".
Also told me about fire fighters that had to watch themselves fighting fires on Bear Mountain because of the copperheads.

Eagleed,
Used to hunt with family, in East Mauchunk ( sp) now Jim Thorpe, over by Bear Mt.
My Cousin had a brand new 44 revolver for snakes bout 45 yrs ago. He wore it fishing a small stream and lost it the first time out- someplace in the water he figured. Walked that stream forever and he never found that pistol.

Better yet just leave the snakes alone, they are not going to 'ATTACK" you.If you are where snakes are known to be make noise when walking, look before stepping over objects, you see one walk away they won't come after you.All snakes are beneficial!

Whistling while walking along with smacking a stick while walking will keep them down and away. But if they are cornered though and you get close to the rock they are hiding under; i do believe they still wil strike...

If I saw someone walking, whistling, and banging a stick on the ground---I'd be REAL tempted to shoot them w/ 22 snake shot--lol

im sure metal does also in fear of getting whacked across the head with a petrified stick from a disgruntled brook trout fisher who got his fish spooked from some panzie with a 22 who was popping off rounds at sparrows thinking they were snakes...

Copperheads WILL hide in the leaf litter and STRIKE YOU - even if you do not bother them..

Rattlesnakes will at least give you a warning.

I harvest one a year - Legally via PA Game Commission permit - they taste like chicken...:)

Now I got the heebie jeebies after all this snake talk.
Was doing some lawn stuff after the rain today (Sun. ) in SR country and a garter snake bout a foot long took off by my foot and I darn near had a heart attack.
Went up to the UFZ after and no sooner got in the water by the upper wire and one swam across to my side right in front of me. It was smiling and sticking its tongue out at me too.
Oh--had one Atlantic hit and missed it- the rod bent kinda nice though-made the whole trip worthwhile. Saw another on for a short time and a couple of guys also hit and missed. Nice bunch of guys up there.

Very nice fishing, but I hate when they cross the water near me.

I was fishing Campbell Run in the PA Grand Canyon one hot August Day. The water was low and clear and I was walking the trail above the creek when this big black rattler shot out across the trail right at my feet and went into a pile of rocks.

I went back to the Jeep.

I went to a couple years ago - held in Noxen,Pa.

I was more intimidated by the snake ramblers (and the Noxen,Pa. residents) than the snakes...

She didnt get hit but said it was a big 'watersnake' or a "milk snake" hmmmmmmm sounded more like a just  peeled copperhead to me. Hafta get out there soon.
