Trout line

Has anyone used trout magnets S.O.S. line? i have a spool of it in 2 pound test, but idk if its any good. I normally use trilene XL in 4 pound test, but this year i wanted to change it up and use 2 pound test. Should i stick with the trilene in 2 pound or use the S.O.S. line?

use what you got and find out how good it is.  is it limp enough so it doesn't come off the spool?  tie some knots and see how strong they are or if they slip.  take a 10 ft section, tie off 1 end and pull the other and see if it breaks easily use a fish scale if you have 1 to measure the breaking strength.  if it passes try it out

2lb test which I guess would be around .006  (5x),  could  get away with using as a tippet.  But spooling it up on a spinning reel....well.....you'll probaby lose your lure on the slightest hang up. IMO

Why does everyone who trout fishes use 2 or 4 lb test line? Surely one does not think the trout can see it?..WF

i got bored with four pound test, isn't much of a challenge to catch stocked trout with it, so i just wanted to try and make it more challenging and use 2 pound test. If it really is that much weaker than 4lb test, ill stick with four pound test, but if it can handle stocked trout i'll more than likely spool up with it instead.

I use standard 4 lb mono when I have to, but I like to use my steelie line if I have it, Tectan 8.6lb test that is the same as standard 4lb diam mono. It's strong stuff, but any quality 4lb should be fine.
I would only use 2lb if your fishing a lake and I would use a longer rod, suck as Whuppin Stick 8.5" crappie rod or something like that. I would not use 2lb in the streams, the extra pressure from a fish running in the current adds extra stress on your connections. Plus any little fray or nick in the line will be compounded. I've used some 2lb as leader material on some of my ice rods for pellet heads and have had two lost fish this year with the line breaking. Now both trout were larger 14-17", but 2lb was just too light for that application.

I somewhat agree with JEB in that I would only use 2lb if your fishing in a lake. I would still use 4lb if your fishing streams. If you are fishing in a lake and already have the 2lb spool then use it and see if you like it. You already have it so give it a try.

i like to bust the brush while fishing for the stockies so i use #4 just to be able to save some hooks from the bushes...if fishing steel i switch to #6 just to be able to use a little muscle...its all in personal preference so find what you like

It seems like most of you agree that 2 pound is just to light, i may stick with 4 pound test then. Didn't think of fish getting into the current. If i really get that bored i may just switch over later on and see how it works.

Good line, but if it gets overexposed to the sun, it will weaken!

Are you talking about the S.O.S. line?

You can definitely get away with 2 lb line if you know what you're doing. Especially when fishing for stocked trout in Pennsylvania.

Think about it. How many stocked trout do you catch that weigh more than two pounds? And remember that with the proper technique and drag you can bring in fish way over the test strength.

The 2 lb line class record for brown trout is 20 lb 12 oz. For rainbow trout it's 26 lb 1 oz.

I usually use the smallest line I can get away with in any situation. When fishing for stocked trout in Pennsylvania that means either 2 lb test or, at most, 4 lb test (for high, fast or snag-filled waters).

What are the advantages? Beyond added sensitivity, there's a good chance you'll catch more fish; especially as the season progresses and the fish see more anglers. Lower diameter line is not only more difficult for fish to see, it also gives you a more natural presentation.

If you're uncomfortable using 2 lb line, I'd recommend spooling with 4 lb Trilene XL as you usually do, but attaching a 2 lb test flourocarbon leader with a blood knot. You'll see better results, and your confidence in the line will probably improve.
