5-8 is the rough range that is appropriate. Depending on the conditions, the particular stream you're on, and how many other guys are around, you'll probably want to be heavier than a 5, but it can be done. If your 5 wt is a particularly powerful 5 wt (and thus fishes more like a real 6) then you'll be fine. Probably better to stay away from the super crowded sections if you're fishing a lighter rod.
My personal idea rod for Erie steel is an 11' 6 wt. But that's just me.
