Talked to a guy today while I was trimming brush on the sides of the road. Asked him if he has been seeing any buck or any big ones. He said that he hasn't seen anything lately. Funny I said, just watched 4 different buck come down the hill on the other side of his woods from his house trailing a doe. that was yesterday. This is only about 150 yards from his house. been seeing them chasing for about a week or so. Seen a small albino 6 point and a big 6 chasing a doe last week while working. Even got a few pics with my cell phone camera.

So whats that mature buck do after he "locks down"...he chases another one..i dont think he just goes to the next doe in estrus and locks her down. actually if you think about it. she locks him down. shes the one that lets him jump up her back and do the freaky. just my opinion :D

albino buck! thats pretty awesome for sure.

Thank's to all the expert answers,I've learned so much off the puter(about the rut),compare to 46 years in the woods, thanks to all that helped me get my pre-rut buck this year in Pa.,can anybody out there help me in Ohio? I'm a rookie when it comes to hunting 140-180 class whitetails like the rest of you experts. My son's 25 years old and be willing to bet has killed more bucks and deer than some of you hard hitting buck masters, and where did he learn this? Not off the puter, the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree. Thanks IRONHED,a very enlighting post,it made my season so much better,I think I know what Im doing wrong now? Well it's 3:20 and I better head to Ohio soon,I really feel good about today,I'll post my pic's of my 180 I've been hunting him for 46 years,he's going down hill this year, but he's still doggin, pushin, chasin does, lockdown can't be too far away, can it?

Come on ironhed we're not in iowa or illinois a 120 inch buck for pa is a giant. Are you sure you know what you're looking at?I saw 7 bucks on a all day sit yesterday in washington all crusing and one dogging not even close to been over.Look at the moon phases the rutting moon isn't till nov 21.I passed on one scrub seven and had a 18 inch 8 point at 45 yards but never gave me a good shot so i passed on him.I could also say i left a 120 inch buck go again come guy that's an awesome buck for pa.

There are a lot bigger than 120 inches in the state. Much like one that got a free pass last night. At 430pm a nice doe walks by and thump then runs 40 yards and falls down WOOOOHOOOO freezer meat. Then well waiting a few minutes to climb down and field dress and tag the doe. Hear a stick snap behind me well NO SHEET A monster stands there ten yards away I still have bow in hand. I have to say it was MIGHTY TEMPING TO TAKE THIS MONSTER. But I had a doe down forty yards from me that needed field dress and tagged before I could take another deer. I counted 11 points there were a few stickers as well. Body was huge as is for most the big boys in that hunting area. He hung around till almost dark and just TEASING THE HECK OUT OF ME!!! The monster never spooked and well needless to say I'll be waiting for him tonight, if shows up he going to have a VERY BAD DAY !!!!! LOL BE SAFE AND GOOD LUCK DAVE

Sorry but a 120 inch deer is not a giant in pa. It is a very nice buck but if you have enough time to put in you can have a legitmate chance of getting a shot at an 110-130 inch deer every year, at least in the area I hunt. Now a 140+ inch deer is a different story.

I'm not gonna say it, Chicken, because Moses already did.  Thanks Moses.  I already have a handful of those under my belt.
Chicken, I passed on several deer this year around the same range and shot mucher lesser of a buck.  I have no desire to shoot a 2.5 year old deer.  None.  My limit is 3.5 and up.
I do not need to have "my buck".  Plenty of does around.

Seven trips in the woods and NO DEER! It's almost like they vanished. We go spotting and they are everywhere, All doe no bucks. Rut is late in Northern Butler County. I've hunted there for years and never had it this bad. There are plenty of deer just not moving in the daylight. Allegheny County still is fine though. I intend on whacking at least 2-3 doe this week before beer season.

It's tooo warm....

the does are only moving at night and first light around here... then bed down until an hour before dark...

we need a cold front and some days of cold tempertures soon...

50s and 30s just ain't gonna do it..

bear season may really suck if it does not start to get cold...

and I'd hate to see another rifle season where you can hunt in only a sweatshirt for the day....

My wife called me on the way to work this morning and she saw two bucks -- both yutes (one a small 6 and the other a spike) -- that were hit and killed 5 yards apart.  They weren't there last night at 10 PM, but they were both dead this morning at 7:30.

Wonder if they were chasing does or just out for a beer.

On the way from work on rt 28 tonight I could see a good size deer in the distance on a ridge about 35 yrds above the road(the flat by shaler water works) as I got closer I could see it was a mature 8pt (scrub rack) looked like he was looking at the road. Once I got right to the deer I could see a doe standing beside the road. Things did not look good for her no matter which way she went.

Yes I agree there's a lot big deer, but a 120 is a very respectable deer,a lot of talk of big one's but not much killing. Ironhed, how does the great master age live deer? I can make a guess, but till you look at the lower jaw,it's a guess. My son and I have kill some nice mature deer in the past 5 years and a lot have been 2 1/2 year old year that field dressed body weights of 150- 200 lbs ,racks have been 7 to 11 pts, with spreads of 16 1/2 - 19 1/4,some of you trophy hunters will pass, but not my son or I,it's Pa. Not where the DRURY BROTHERS HUNT.

I don't know, Tuna.  Maybe I age deer like you observe and kill "heavy-racked" and "old warrior" bucks. lol

I know, I know...you've spent 46 years deer hunting so all must bow, I know, I know.  I respect that.  But surely by now(after 46 years) you are NOT calling a "mature" deer, 2.5 years old?  Really?

And after the 46 years-thingy, you should know by now that including number of points and spread measurements in a conversation about deer's age is totally irrelevant.  I know, I know, it's the sarcastic thing, right?

Also, during the entire 46 years, did you spend all that money to send out the deer's lower jawbones to have them professionally aged?  That's a lot of money, man!
Or, are you one of those self-proclaimed "finger-testers?"  You know, stick the finger in the mouth, feel the molars and spout off an age?  Maybe you have one of those jawbone plaques(probably from a deer farm in Michigan) hanging on your wall to compare/contrast ages?  Just some wild guesses here.

I'd love to see a "nice mature" 2.5 year old PA buck that goes 200lbs!

It was fun for awhile but now it's gettin' a little old, Tuna.

In PA
120 class buck "A MONSTER", Your NUTS, PERIOD........
130-135 Respectable but still not a monster
140-145 Very Nice, Very respectable
150+ Now were starting to talk Monster Buck! They are here, Most will not see them, Many more will not kill them. They are theat big for a reason and it's not for being stupid. If you go into the woods and are not scent free, You likely aren't going to ever see a 150+ Buck. If you make noise you probably won't ever see a 150+ buck. If you don't spend the time scouting and getting a good pattern on the buck, You probably won't see a 150+ Buck. If you think a 120 class is a monster, You probably won't ever still be hunting when a 150+ buck shows up cause there are plenty of 120 inch bucks running around that are young and stupid. I hope to kill a 150-170 class buck in PA someday. They are here, I've seen a couple at night just haven't spent the time scouting and hunting to figure them out.
These are just my opinions

Saw a big bodied buck chasing a doe through a field in Round Hill Park last night.   Light was fading so I couldn't tell how big the rack was but from over 200 yds away, I could see antler in the fading light.  If work weren't so busy I'd be out there filming....

A buddy of mine has a small captive deer herd.  The majority of his does were bred by the 11th this year, except one.  Last year, this same herd did not reach peak estrous till Thanksgiving week.

Interesting stuff.

This is in my buddy's yard in Boalsburg, near State College. Yes, that is a 3D target and one horny buck.

I've gotten some blood on 3D targets rear end in the past.
