Here's the story on the buck photo I posted...

Clarksville's Kern could make B&C book
    By George Block

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the rarity of a typical Pennsylvania whitetail buck that would top the Boone & Crockett minimum score of 170.
Just a couple of days ago, I held a Washington County rack that I am sure will top that number.

Barry Kern of Clarksville shot a 14-point recently that, while I didn't score it, I watched John Dino and Bobby Rogers green score. As a B&C official measurer, I am not supposed to green score bucks, but I let them do it as I watched.

Kern's buck had a gross score of 189 and a net score of 174.

If that's the true green net right now there is a chance it will drop just below 170 after the drying out period. One heck of a buck though. It's one of those cases where you wish it wouldn't have had double brow tines.

The double brow tines are ok since there is one on each side. It is the amount of difference in the length of the brow tines and points off of them and that extra, unmatched point (G-5), on the right antler that become deducted inches.

Doc-- Yes, the difference in length, the difference between the g-2's and the small point on the right side are deductions from a typical score. Some of the bucks with the most unique antlers score very poorly as typicals. Dropping 4" after drying may be a bit extreme but I have seen a couple 190's non-typ drop that much assuming they were measured correctly to start with.

For typical scoring anything that is not typical (double brow tines, stickers, etc.) is a deduction, along with non symetrical measurements from side to side. I just laugh at most guys when the talk about seeing a 160 class buck, when you see what it takes to score that high most of us will never see one in the wild let alone shoot one.

That is truly an impressive specimen and have no doubt that the green score is accurate, hope it makes the book...

For B+C typical 160 gets in the awards book, 170 qualifies for 'all time'.

Even scored as a non-typical symmetry from side to side still comes into play. The same process is applied to score a non-typical and the only difference when scored as non typical is that the abnormal points will be added, not subtracted as they would be when scored as a typical.

This one will "score better"(rank higher) as a typical IMO. Other than the plit brows and G5 on the right side, the rack has very good symmetry. I see no reason to doubt this guy netting over 170". However, I am personally more in tune with gross scores, as they tell how big the buck truly is, not how symmetrical it is.

At any rate, it is one heck of a buck and congrats to the hunter.

I heard that too. You are correct on where Greene county hill is located. Pitgas is less than a mile upstream from that bridge.
