I use a cabelas traditional II in 8 weight and I have had no problems with it. I think I paid like 95 for rod and reel, and I beat the crap outta them this summer catchin carp. Those fish would smoke me to the backing and the reel didn't miss a beat. Also caught them on my gander mountain frontier IM6 in 5 weight. Abit too light for steel but it worked for years till I got the 8 wt.

FishUSA has some nice entry-level combos and they were great to talk to. Support the sponsor.

i would check out fishusa first, also. the tfo rods and pflueger trion reels will do you nicely on the tribs. their service is awesome also. i ordered wednesday at 11 and received thursday at 12. extremely fast for the 100 miles that it traveled. i never feel like an order number when i call there...they will talk to you and help you.

clinch, it will never happen. i can't even tie my own shoes. i told myself many years ago that if i gave up drinking and smoking that i would have a lot of extra money. then cabela's and bass pro started sending me catalogs and when i broke free from them, this site came along. if i am not ordering from fishusa, someone here is tempting me to buy something else. i have no will power...none, nada. steelhead, crappies, trout, perch, smallies, and cats...makes no difference. the evil ones here put ideas in my head and then make me buy stuff..

i am only a puppet of the powers that be on this site. before i came here, i collected stamps and vintage bic pens. now i am a tackle junkie. remember, i am only the messenger.

btw, now you have to start looking for a back-up outfit. would be a shame to get to the tribs have have a rod or reel malfunction . just one more outfit, honey, i promise.

hey you better buy the 3wt before i make you get a 9wt for fishing for bass at that new lake you like so much, lake arther.  i love fish for bass in the weeds using a topwater popper.  if you think watch a trout take a dry is exciting, watching a popper blow-up on the water will make your knees weak.  let me know when you want to try, i got a rod for you to use and a yak to get you where you need to be.

I just put together my setup for an entry level and went with an okuma (8wt) SLV rod with an pflueger trion reel put some cortland 333+ on and I am ready to go. PR's has the trion for $99 and the rod is $80... I got mine on ebay for half that, checked it out at a local shop first to see what I thought before I bought. All I have to do now is get it in the water....... THIS IS ALL RAP's FAULT!!! Now to start into tying my own flies......
