Scandis and Skagits

What would all of you swingers reccomend for the PA and OH tribs with a 11ft 7wt switch rod? I've casted skagit heads before but would a lighter scandi head be better for the shallow tribs to lake erie?
Thanks,
Mike

I think a scandi head and polyleaders(or a long mono leader) would be great for swinging flies on our tribs. I'm not sure how well it will cast if you are(gasp!) using indicators. There's only one way to find out...

    honestly...

in PA it hard to find water (even in the highest fishable flows) where you can effectively swing a 27-32' head and a 10-15' tip
on the low end... you are looking at 50' from your grip to the fly

    best best...
rio skagit short (20' head) and a 5foot clear int tip
    OR
have custom head and tips made

    OH is different...

I use a Rio AFS Scandi head with 10' poly(s), but am seriously considering a skagit rig. KJH is definitely right. It's hard to find water to swing in Erie and the skagit, I believe, is good medicine for the tight places. The Catt? Now that's another story altogether.

Good luck swinging PA. Yes it can be done but, well you know. I fish both style heads here in OH. A scandi and poly leader will fish just as deep as any skagit and tip out there. So dont let that make up your mind on a line set up. What questions you should be asking yourself is what size flies do I want to throw. If you are wanting to throw flies the size of sewer rats well go skagit. If you throw smaller to normal flies go scandi. As far as room goes. I have backed myself into some tight spots with my scandi. I just switch over to a water loaded skagit style cast in tight areas. Most of the time here I do use my skagit head though. Just because of the size flies I like to toss. I am trying to downsize my flies but I just like going big. Just get rid of the pin and pick a style and stick with it. If you have any questions shoot me a pm and I'll help as much as I can.
