My buddy Mike and I were on Walnut on Tuesday the 28th at daybreak. We drove West then North through a constant rainfall. Walnut was on the way up when we got there. By 1130, Walnut was unfishable. We went to Elk, from the waterfall below Uncle John's down. I saw 3 fish. the water was tinted, but definitely not blown. I heard from others that it came up pretty quickly later in the afternoon. Does anyone know if many fish came into Elk as the result of this latest favorable weather? We went back to Walnut and fished till dark, not "ripping flies" trying to snag anything, but drifting presentations along the banks and slack water. I got skunked, but Mike caught a real nice brown on a pink chenille pattern that we tie. We went to Walnut on Wedneday the 30th, and you would have to be the worst fisher person in the world to not catch something. It wasn't a tremendous run, but the fish were taking just about anything that you could throw at them, and boy were they BIG! I ended up with 3 browns landed and released, many steelies, the last one probably the largest that I have landed in many years. It was huge, chrome, but starting to get it's colors, big hook jaw. I love it! I have a 13 pounder on my wall, and this one may have been a bit larger. If we have this kind of weather for the One Fly, records may be made that will stand for quite a while, in my humble opinion. I remarked to WCO that it seemed to me that there was a lot more catch and release going on then I have seen in past seasons. I can't speak for the weekend gangs, but I was pretty pleased with the friendliness of the people that I fished with, and also the lack of litter along the stream. Let's keep up the good work. To the WCO's - good job too - Keep stocking browns!
