St Croix Avid 7'6" 2 wt

Hi guys,

Anyone fishing the above rod? It is new to me since they don't stock St Croix in the UK. I handled it at Gander Mountain the other day and liked what I felt, but it wasn't with line on it. It felt like a winner for PA freestone streams like Dunbar, Meadow Run, etc.

Thanks,
Rick

Can't speak for the 762, but the 793 is my go-to PA trout rod. Great all-arounder for the lineweight's typical usage. Never heard anyone say anything bad about the Avid lightweights other than from the guys who love fast rods, and the guys that like the Ultras and Elites better.

Avids are awesome rods. I have a demo of the exact model that you are talking about, and except for the fact that I fell and broke it and have yet to send it back, it is a GREAT rod for the money, and really, really good looking too.

    I'd recommend it to anyone

I think a 7 1/2 ft. 4 wt, fast action rod is ideal for small stream fishing. Two weights are just too light, IMHO.

I do about 2/3 of my small stream fishing with the 7'9" 3wt Avid I mentioned above...the rest is done with a 6'9" 1wt TFO.

Why in the world would you ever try to catch a steelhead on a 1wt rod?

I've caught trout bigger than some of the steelhead I've caught and those fish were landed with a 3wt. It's not really the right rod for the task, but it can certainly be done. just need lots of room on the stream, unlikely in Erie.

I just don't understand the point of using a rod that isn't even near right for the fish or the conditions.

For what its worth, I just noticed Cabelas has the 762 Avid on sale for $160. A good deal if you're in the market.
