dano did a great tute on this.
i use polar fiber for the body and use a few strands of this shiny stuff called 'live glow' i can't remember who makes it.

WF= i'm trying to figure out how to add more bulk to the body than i will be ready for those big 'cats'.

Jerry...

Maybe try tying in an underbody of palmered hackle behind the PF, before you push it in?

cold, that sounds good. with a semi-soft palmered hackle should give it bulk and still a good flow in the water.

DT,
You could use a larger cone and leave more underfur with the hair. That would bulk up the front more before the hair tapers down.
The original is tied more or less as a hollow fly using imitation polar bear hair. Polar bear hair has a bright, translucency to it.
If you want longer flies, you can buy (in the U.S. @ Irish Anglers)  serebjanka fur which is russian mountain goat. It's supposed to be 6-12 inches and has the same qualities as polar bear.
I think Finn raccoon with a larger hook and cone could have some possibilities.
The largest steelhead I caught this year was a silver cone and a body made entirely us rainbow wing & flash. 4 1/2 inch fly.
Possibilities are nearly endless.

The stuff is called Gliss n Glow (color is live glow). Just ordered some. Think I'm going to try some on a tube and see how it works out. I remember that post now that you mention it, but your ties looked more realistic that those didn't come to mind. Thanks for the help DT.

Got some fresh polar fiber and the gliss and glow and decided to try some of those triple threats. Any critique would be appreciated. I can't seem to get the right proportions of polar fiber, seems like the more I add, the sparser they look. Also anyone have any tips on getting the gliss n glow straight, or to stay straight. Thanks. A few are on tubes and didn't fit well into the cone.

DJ, i had the same problem with the gliss & glow. i thought i got a bad bunch!!
if you wet it when tying it on it sticks together a little better. also i wet the whole fly when i'm done and let it dry.
they don't look bad. they'll look better when wet. ~dt

It could probably pass for an iso nymph, but its a brown stone.

Hook is a Mustad 36890 size 8, but the more imprtant question is, "why does a nymph hater want to know?"

It looked like it was much smaller and I was thinking it'd be sweet for steelhead if it was in the #12-14 range...and I'd never seen a hook that style that small.

I have 36890s in #10 but that's as small as I've seen em.

No desire to tie nymphs, but in a smaller size, that tie would make an awesome iso nymph. just make the stripe on top white.

KJH: I soak my spey feathers so the stems are more supple, but some are still too thick, and are a bit unwieldy. Do you split your spey feather's stems in half before tying? both those tubes have black spey as the first collar material, and I was considering splitting them.

this is not the burnt goose spey hackle (which i do soak and split) rather the whiting spey hackle... some companies will call schlappen "spey hackle"
burnt goose is the purple

the longer thiner fibers are the whiting spey hackle..
there is also 2 turns of schlappen (spey hackle) in front

i have seen the whiting listed as unavailable recently on some sites
there is no webbing, sparse, and a very fragile stem
it takes some (frustrating) time to get used to it
a raw feather on the right... prepped on on the left
it is nearly impossible to tie these in by the tips

Mine is a few colors of this stuff:

http://www.worleybuggerflyco.com/naturesspiritt/ns_spey_hackle.htm

the stems are way thick and extremely rigid. I'm stuck either using only the top 1/4 of the feather, or tying off a super bulky stem. I'll try splitting it. The barbs look nice on a fly, its the spey I bought on the tube flies above as the first part of the collar.

SonofZ - nice tubes, shumakov's??? I use the same spey hackle from natures spirit. I don't always split it(depends on the fly) but I do soak it in warm water for at least half hour or so.

D-nymph - Love the circus peanut. Fly has done some damage for me this year lol.

Tippe - Those are not legs lol. The thorax is Hareline Wiggle Dub in a dubbing loop.
