2 for 5 on the DSR

despite the popular belief of no fish and too warm of temps, my father today on sunday morning on 2 hrs effort went 2 for 5 in the DSR and all bright silver bullets that screamed his drag out and even chased up to 100 yards. when i was up earlier in the week the fish were a little colored. this means that these are new fish coming and the ones i saw have run the river. i'd say somewhere around 500 fish have already entered the river. i startedg seeing them enter on tuesday of this past week. now, for the three days my father has been up there he has not seen a dead fish. i'm not saying that nop fish are dying though. but by no means is it a 100% mortality rate. people can stick to those text book norms, but as long as the fish don't stress and they find an oxygenated shaded deep bank or pocket when the sun comes up, or a spring on the bottom of a deep hole they will not die. and there is plenty of this on the salmon river. august always produces fish for us no matter what the conditions. i should shut my mouth though, because fishing with no anglers in sight and hooking these fish are as good as it gets. like i've always said, i often find solitude on the salmon river. it takes patience, energy, and knowledge when targeting these early runners though. this is why i rarely see repeat august anglers. and i like it that way.

My buddy ran the salmon acres lodge and used to get a few at the end of july, if conditions were good more than a few.

you are right fan...haven't seen it for myself yet but coming from a very reliable souorce if water is high enough sometimes even late june a few sharks invade when the water comes up... it's a long shot though. same for august. that's why i like it though.

thanks Dime, I scored this whole week off, maybe I'll try a day or two. My earliest sucess was August 11, they ran hard all were mint silver and saw three other fishermen the whole day. That was NICE!!!!!

chartruese and pink yarn puffs/flies. pulsates in the water almost like a popssicle, but much faster and cheaper to make. i think it was more so the secret spot he was in. nobody around. i would venture to say 50 to 60 fish had to have moved by him for him to have that success...

I'm not surprised. If you remember the nightmare that was 2007 with the drought and darn things still ran, we are better in better shape than then. With a weekend water release and the possiabilty of rain from a cold front on Friday and maybe some weather from hurricane earl, I think this weekend is worth a shot for us daytrippers.

With 750 running this weekend I would bet the fishies will start running in force, and I think they will then run 350 or so after that.
2bonthe water, this is good those fish will be waiting for us in our "secret" spot for our trip!

Hey, I paid to fish when I had to make one  trip a year.--years earlier I fished that same water for free.
I  was able to buy a place up there and now have  more time but there is excellent fishing throughout the entire river.
During the run a bad day on DSR means nothing to the fish already in the system. For the short time they need to pass through the lower river I think it gets way too much attention. Save your money for an extra night or two and fish further up.
I dont mean to say the DSR is bad or not worth the fee as it has great water and is a neat place to fish but I think far too much attention is given to it- like its the only place to go or something.

wow, i didn't realize my post would make everyone's mouth water. lol... hey ''beonthewater'', don't worry if these fish run this weekend. there will be plenty more right behind them i am sure. some are saying it could be the best season in years. just don't tell me where you hook in to them because i'll burn your spot along with PA's haha lol... i'll be up again this friday til sunday. can't wait to see the look on my boys face once a 25 plus silver bullet explodes out of the water. he will finally realize that he is too small still to fish for salmon... tight lines guys

oh yeah, and hook you are right. i hit a run of cohoes that year 2 days in a row. they ran in, then ran back to the estuary. then the next day, they came in again. definitely in my top ten trips ever. the steelhead came in nice in mid october that season as well. what was that, 100 cfs??? everyone is worried aabout the 2011 return from that draught year, but i believe it was back in 95 they had an even worse draught, and the return from that spawn was surprisingly the best in years. so i'm with you. i take text book conditions with a grain of salt. not saying that it's not important to know, but when knowing them, you can look even deeper and draw your own conclusions based from your experiences. and to be honest with you, in my experience, i've seen major runs of trout or salmon in just about any water/temperature condition possible. so go figure. just keep fishing, that's all you can do

i wouldn't be surprised if the upper fly, lower fly, school house, wire, ellis..... etct etc. is holding fish. there was 2000 plus a week ago. not saying it's loaded but i'm sure you're right. you just have to find em.

DB, kudos on the catch. didn't say it could not happen but unlikely given the conditions.
do you think it would have if we did not have such rain last week ? I don't
They come in all types of river temps but it does take something to trigger them.

I was pre occupied with the Travers racing all weekend Will be spending this weekend there with minimal expectations with the grandkids.. But yea another water increase , yea there were about 2,000 fish that ran up last Labor Day weekend but still far too few fish in the system yet for those to drive from a far with big expectations and the few are getting picked out pretty quick in the LBH.

I plan to fish the DSR in the first week or two after Labor Day depending on weather.....$45 a day is peanuts if the fishing is good....Hell, a guide costs $350 a day....What good is it to be over a hole full of fish if you can't cast due to heavy traffic.

hey tuna, it's always worth a shot for me. my drive is 4.5 hours but it's nothing to me really. plus i have a place to stay and also work most of the time i'm up. you are right though; august is a long shot for guys who only go up a few times. i'd hate to convince someone to go and have it be a wash for them while they could've saved their money for a later time. my father continued to have success through out his stay. i leave friday morning for the weekend. brining the whole family. hey chart.. very good point in regards to guides fees and what not. i'm not saying a guide isn't worth it. they deserve every dollar they charge. but 45 bucks in mid sept. to mid october for me atleast is always a sure shot in DSR. and for steelhead; i love it. i have a season pass though. i don't think i would go at all if i didn't have the pass.

    Right on DB:
If you have a purpose of enjoying what Oswego County has to offer , it's beautiful.. And from here (August) on out time on water is all bonus. Thats why I think NY fishing is .

    2.
No I did not play in the band Hot Tuna or Jorma Kaukonen. Yes I knew them well.
