Sounds like they were both lucky men to have survived. Boat size and motor troubles aside... why would you not wear your life jacket when the water is that rough?
I am just thankful that someone saw them and was able to help! Kudos to the fellows who picked them up!

It was rough yesterday, but not really that bad if you took it slow and paid attention. Most of the big waves were rollers. Feeshin' was SLOW tho...

"Waves up to 6 feet cause their 17 foot boat to capsize." Coulda been the problem. Glad to hear they're gonna be ok...

    Sad story about the teens...

Yep, the forecast was off a bit yesterday. I read it in the morning, said 1-3's. I know it was surely 3-5's by 10 AM.

Definately sad news about the kids.

Pretty sure I saw the Lund you speak of if it was a red 18'er, they were heading out with us.

We were out in a 19'er and we had absolutely no business being out there. It was still building when we got off around noon, I know this because at 6'3" standing on the deck I was looking up at the tops of some of the waves . It was enough to make me say I don't think I will be fishing the lake again until I can afford a 22'+ boat...

I also went out of NE on Sunday.  Black Lund, suntop.  Heard on the radio of the capsize, 2 others during the day that needed assistance and the 3 people in NY waters.  Not near anyone to help out.  Glad someone was near the capsize to lend a hand on getting those 2 out and back to the marina.   Rough conditions to say the least but you had to be very mindful of what you were doing, especially going into those waves.  Boated 5 eyes.

We need to talk, I might be able to help you out with that bigger boat, sadly.

Sad story, couple of reasons, but I think I've reached a crossroad where the Erie boat may not fit in the picture for a few years. Really pizzes me off cause I just got it where I want it now...

I was out there sunday and decided to call it a day when the prop ate my drift sock! I seen a 18 foot open bow looked like a nice pymy boat out in 74 feet of water with maybe a 25 or 40 horsepower on it and actuallt took a picture and sent it to friends with the word ***holes attached to the pictures. Now we were in a 24 footer and it was borderline safe to be out there! fishing was great 4 eyes boated and 4 lost at the back of the boat and another 2 we never seen were lost bringing them in in less than an hour! Oh ya then the steely we got after the eyes. On my way in I heard at least two different distress calls one being the boat at northeast. The coast guard starting talking and another coast guard from New York came right over him and I couldn't understand what they were trying to transmit. I actually called them back on the radio and ask them to repeat what they said and they gave me a land line number to call which I did and found out they were looking for the boat out of northeast. Then another call from a boat called overtime and as the Erie Coast guard was trying to communicate another Coast guard staion out of I think NY was again transmitting a scheduled whatever they were trying to say and walking all over the Erie Coast guard again. I adjusted my squelch which helped a little but still couldn't understand Erie CG when they were both talking. Has anyone else had that happen?

It's great that those guys were seen and rescued and my prayers go out to them for quick recovery.

As I said before there are certain boats that should never be on that lake and I believe this was another perfect example. ESOX pm or call me I have a boat that is cheap that I think would work great for you! Crestliner Sabre 22 G/L which is the great lakes model. It is only 22 but very deep and very stable.
