Depends if you are mounting on bow or transom. A bow mounted motor will move the boat easier. ORIGINAL: HereLilFishy Need help on what thrust to buy for a 14 v.I want something that will move when its windy. What do you think is better minn kota or motorguide?

How heavy is your boat? What kind of water are you fishing? There are alot of factors that can effect the thrust required. When in doubt buy the biggest you can afford, you will never say "man i wish i had less power"

Its going to be a transom mount, not enough room on the bow. From people i talked to offline all say to go with motorguide. What im looking at now is a 45 thrust. This boat will only be used for smaller trout lakes.

My minnkota 30lb endura pushs my 14 foot boat very well. (heavy boat, full floor with raised full castng decks, 25hp mariner, 4 hp rude, two batterys side console, 10 gallons gas, 100lbs musky gear and 400lbs of people...) That little motor will keep me at 2.5mph for 3-4 hours. You will not get much faster than that with any electric motor out there. Unless in thick weeds, you will not tell much of a difference from 30 to 45.

if you could make a mount on the bow a bow mount foot control is super convenient. ive always had minn kotas but it doesnt mean theyre any better or worse. as was said, buy the biggest you can afford.

I have a Minn. 55# 12v (the 5f/3r speeds) that will almost put my 14' jon boat on plane. Got it off craigslist w/ an extra battery for a good deal... speaking of which, I just saw another for sale this week...I'll see if I can find it. it was a 55# also & said it was 'like new, used once' if I recall correctly.

You would only be "smoking" for 2 hours then batteries would be dead. All "FOUR" of them. I know you were only kidding. ORIGINAL: psu_fish ORIGINAL: Outdoor Adventures A LOT OF $$ JUST TO TURN HEADS. LOL ORIGINAL: psu_fish make the PFBC look twice on electric only lakes http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/trolling_motors/electric_outboard/edrive.aspx it is, but a little 14 footer would be smoking on the water
