almost sounds like the gasket between the carb and the engine block is bad. i'm not sure how that motor is setup but most outboard motors (as you prob already know) use water to cool the block, kinda like coolant in a car. so it might be flushing water through the carb as well and if you have a bad gasket that would cause it to leak. only other cause i can think of is a crack in the carb itself. let me kno wat you find? kinda interested to see wat it is.

Chicken, a fellow on here named ErieMako just rehabbed and old Merc 50... he might need the serial number from the motor mount though, or a specific year to be able to help you out. He usually cruises the boards daytime during the week, so won't answer right away but I'll let him know you had a question. Hope it works out for you... I happen to really love the old Mercs and we have a collection of them now... hence his practice with them!

Does the motor run or is it leaking while you are trying to get it started?
Is it doing this leaking right out of the carb. throat? (where the throttle butterfly is at)
Is it the top or bottom carb?

The first two things that need done is a compression check on all 4 cylinders to see if you have a bad block or piston and to look at the spark plugs and either post a pic of them or describe their appearance top to bottom (as in: top one is black and crusty, bottom one looks clean or grayish) so we can see if you have water in a cylinder or bad lower crank seal.

Water coming back out of the carb. is serious, but not always terminal...those old Merc 50's are a sweet motor and usually worth rehabbing!

By the way, where are you located???

We did a compression check got 120 on all 4 cyclinders. It's leaking out of the throat both when it's running and when trying to start. It's the bottom carb.I leave near pittsburgh. It will start but won't idle.

    Head gasket?

Unrelated, but may help someone. We had some issues with a "Classic 50" Merc not running right and hard to start, after chasing it for a year and a half a factory rep figured out that the exhaust was carboned up so bad it was nearly shut. Cleaned out the exhaust tube and she ran good for a year or so till she blew a head gasket.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the comp reading, probably not a head gasket...

Are we certain that this is water dripping out of the carb? - did you let it drip on your finger and check it to see if it smells like gas, our even tastes like gas...yes, I said taste...eeeewwwww!!!

I've seen a lot of Merc carbs cry fuel like that and the motor run lousy from bad/stuck floats...

cracked block or a gasket is gone look at it while its running use a can of cleaner or wd 40 around the bottom carb to see the spot but the water is under pressure to leak

I'm sorry, but I've never seen a 2 cycle outboard drip water out of the carb throat and still run...there isn't any way for the water to come back out except for the crank-case to be filled up and the water coming back out past the reeds.

We still need to verify that this truely is water...
In all my years playing with 2 cycles, there still is much room for a "first" like this!

Yes it is diffently water. We put a cup under it to make sure it was water it was.We think we figured it out. It's leaking in the cyclinder where the exhaust baffle is.We tore it apart gasket was gone but now we got another problem 3 bolts broke off.We bought some cobalt drill bits to try to drill them out.
