Spey Grip

As requested, a two handed small spey caster grip on the simple, but elegant side. This will be going on a 4pc 12' 6wt Spey Rod. Reelseat is from Bob Meiser's arsenal and the shape is equal parts Meiser-esque, 'Bula, client's wants and my input.

Hope you like?!

    very nice simple look....
    very clean

personally i am not a fan of that style
top is too thick.. both in the casting and swing grip
like a rounded non-flare for the bottom hand

that's why you go with a custom built rod.  get the grip exactly as you want it.

This grip will be installed on a 4pc 12' 5/6wt light spey blank and used for spey fishing/GL indi-rig variant. The grip OD (believe it or not)at the widest point is 1.13", for this person it was perfect. He even mentioned that he aft grip could be a bit bigger, but with winter steelhead gloves will be perfect.

Dominic as always your work is way nice. I have to agree with Kev though. For casting 2 handed rods you want a narrow front grip for proper hand postioning. It is easier to get that "key grip" that helps with making crisp casts. With a wider grip the user feels more comfortable with the top hand and may start issuing excessive power with the top hand. A big no no. I would suggest narrowing up the very top of that front grip. But that is what custom rods are about. Doing whatever feels right to the user. Meis did mine for me and we talked in great detail about that issue. I wanted it wider for more comfort so he gave me an extra 1/16 and wouldnt go anymore. After fishing the rod for a season I wish I would have never asked for that wee bit more. Maybe one day I'll send it back to him for a sandjob but, for now it will be fine. The bottom grip looks like it would be just fine but I like what Bob does with his. Very narrow to wrap my 2 fingers around and the "ball" in the midle of my palm. If you ever want to check it out give me a call. I am pretty sure I know who the rod is for and an indicator will but hanging from it anyways so it doesnt really matter. Your work is excellent and I am a big fan. I cant wait to see your thread work and super clean finish.

    Barry-

Thanks for the props...I'll stop down and have a look at the grip you've described. Let me know if you ever want me to chuck it up on the lathe and trim it down for you. Shouldn't take to long to get it right and best of all...it won't cost you a dime.

Believe it or not (is there an echo here?!) the top of that grip is on the slender side. Specifically taken down to just under the confort side for Possum with the exact reasons (verbatum) that you've mentioned. His fingers are long and hands on the big side. The rear grip was dictated by the client, I like the grip the way you've described as well, but he specifically said (while pointing at a picture we took from the net) that he DID NOT want that shape.

I hear ya, I respect your input and I agree...but this rod isn't for me or for you! Well, not this time anyway! LOL!
