flathead fishing on the mon

My friends and I are planning a trip to the Mon on Sat, I was wondering the best place to catch big flatheads?

You may want to specify if you are going to be fishing from shore or on a boat.

Flatheads are my favorite fish to fish for. Havent been out a ton yet this year but from now till fall will be making up for lost time. Nothing big yet.

Read on another thread about guys seeing fish dead, including some flatheads on the Mon. Maybe completely unrelated, but that came to mind when i caught this flat the other night, white patches on head... Maybe a bacterial infection? Seemed otherwise very lively and healthy.

The white patches are spawning marks. Not infection or bacteria. When theyre preparing to spawn, they will fight with each other for the best spawning locations. Ever feel a flatheads mouth??? That sandpaper feel is what causes the spawn marks, well that and some of it is from the fish digging out beds with their heads.

Jt, your probably right. I thought that a strong possibility as well. Thats why i said maybe unrelated to the fish found dead. I often caught them pretty banged up during and just after the spawn, though not always white, though i have caught them like that on occaissions too.

    Dave, i use bluegills mostly.

Man that sucks. I and i know some others really hold those type of fish in high regard. Hopefully it was just the work of a few guys that arent very good at catch & release...fish that took big hooks deep etc. and not something wider in scale.

ya, was out this mornin got a 48in musky..good news is that seen 0 dead fish. could be bad handling lot of guys fish for flatheads on mon, or could be tied in with all these fish everywhere dying from spawn and high water temps.

Yeah, i saw the pic of your ski on the other thread. Helluva fish. Congrats. Always nice to see guys catch a trophy musky on my home water where i cannot. My problem is, i just cant drag myself away from the cats or occaisional other fishing long enough to make a serious effort on the musky.

    Currently Masontown.

Dedication to a specific species sure helps. Same with the flatheads to some extent. Have hard time getting some buds to go. Take them on a slow night or two and its hard to get them to stick with fishing with big gear and palm sized bluegills that nothing else will hit. They wanna cast 2 or 3 inch minnows or nightcrawler on bass gear and catch a fish any fish one after another whenever possible. Nothing wrong with that, but doesnt fit well when we're on the same boat and have differing objectives. They'll often wanna move when id rather stay put etc.

last time i snagged one got hooked in the tail was a 30in blue cat..could be a channel dont know but was a baby blue color and as big around as a truck tire..lol. must be packed in there pretty good cause ive snagged half dozen since last yr in front of his boat, one was a decent size flathead.

Ive never fished Dunkard for cats. Fished it several times many years ago at different stretches of the creek for smallmouths & musky a few times. Caught plenty of bass back then and a couple small skis.

Id imagine since the fish kill, its gonna be quite some time before it becomes worthwhile to fish it again, though i dont doubt you could get into some fish just coming in from the river.
