I bought the cheapo cobra about 9 years ago as a backup. It was junk.

5W on a hand held. Ironhed's link should do the trick.

Just curious as to why you're going hand held. Antenna height has alot to do with range, so I would think that even a good hand held would have it's limitations...

I have an older Humminbird VHF5
Nice radio except keeping it charged was always a pain.
Get one that comes with a 12V adapter

Well I only have a 18 foot Four-Winns Horizon that we dont take out on the big lake unless its 2 footers or less for perch. We hardly ever go more than 3-5 miles out as I've seen how bad Erie can get in a hurry. Its basically a bay boat good for skiing and tubing but we multi-task and fish with it. So I wanted a handheld for safety. I could mount an antenna but I dont see much use out of it so hence the handheld.

I just bought a Standard Horizon HX750S  hand held and  seems like a great radio. Been using it this week and seems to work well and it is 6 watts, comes with 12 volt and 110 volt charger, also many good reports after a little googling
Dont spend what G.M. wants for it though a little searching on line has some great deals
    PS also waterproof and floats

psu, I was just curious, but you could put in a full size radio with a smaller antenna and use the radio while fishing in the bay. It can be quite entertaining when the fishin' is slow

There are some screamin' deals out there on radios right now...

I think my hand held was dead more than it was charged....
