Boat Insurance

The fishing rod thread got me wondering how many guys have their rigs insured. If not why not?

I switched to BoatUS insurance this year and saved $100 and have better insurance than I had with State Farm.

Our rigs are insured, doesn't matter if they are parked in the yard, being towed on the road or floating on the water... for both boat/motors and for contents... we figured out replacement costs on what we carry on an 'average' trip and the total was amazing... incredible how fast you can get money tied up in lures and gear. (and remember, if you end up with worst case scenario... ie. sinking... you will also loose your cell phone, wallet?, keys, replacement auto 'fobs' for remote entry are like $75 dollars!, camera....)
We also carry liability and injury coverage... just in case it's an accident which causes the problem. Worked it through a good agent that I have used for years for home and auto and he got us well covered for a decent cost... well worth it in my eyes.

When I considered the cost of clean up in a worst case it makes insurance absolutely necessary. It's nice to be covered for the boat and equipment, but environmental clean up could cost you everything you own...

I had Erie give me a quote for my boat(s) I thought there price was out of this world!!! I have been with them for 10 years, have multi car and my house with them. Lately i have seen sub par service IMO from them. For my Erie boat they wanted 800$ a year full coverage. IMO thats way to high. My wife and I pay 900$ a year for two newer cars full coverage, why is one boat (worth less than one car) all most as much as both cars?!?

Do not get me wrong here, that is not the main reason why my opinion has been sliding. Both me ad my wife have excellent driving records. There is other reasons why, non boat/fishing related.

Maybe i could be overreacting here. Is 800$ for one boat a year to much? Also i own three boats, so my total bill would not stop at 800$.

I put my boat on my home owners policy thru Erie Insurance. It runs me like $80 more a year.

Just a word of caution about boat insurance. Everyone should check with there agent on there exact coverages, after doing some research with different companies I found a few discrepencies in what the actual coverage was. For one I found Erie Ins does not cover boats on Lake Erie unless stated on policy for an extra charge. I also found an agreeded upon value will not guarantee that is what you will receive. Just a few things to check on.

I have everything through Erie Ins. except my boat. Erie would not cover more than 1K in gear and was outrageous. I have Boat US and while being cheaper seems to be at the top of the list.

After having a long discussion with an friend who owns an ins co. I learned that it is bad to add your boat to your homeowners. 2 claims in 5 years regardless of size and your premiums will go through the roof. So that could include a tree falling on something in your yard and someone hitting your boat, and whammo you are in a whole new premium category. He advises seperate policies for boats and it seems to make sense, the policies are reasonable enough.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I guess I've just been a valued customer for all them years....I pay way less than that! And all my gear and everything else is covered....$15000 boat and additional $5000 in gear....thats enough for me. When I lost my rigger to Erie last year, no questions asked....check was in the mail within days of my claim.

"LOST RIGGER, LOST RIGGER....COME IN LOST RIGGER!?!?!"

Yes my boats are insured. Make sure your policy covers underwater damage. My uncles old policy excluded that and if he would have hit a log NO COVERAGE but he thought the price was right!

If you tournament fish, read the fine print on the bottom of the registration forms...usually they require insurance!
The last tournament that I was looking at entering said that you needed 300 thousand of liability and if they said "Let me see your papers" and you couldnt produce them, you were disqualified from the tournament!

Also, I think that Wolf Run Marina on Kinzua requires proof of insurance to use their launch!

    Yes, we are still here!
