Too many variables to answer that one simply... but in general.... warm water/shallow fish = top water torpedo or jitterbugs late evening/night, and spinners/noisy baits daytime that run shallow...
cold water/deep fish.... plastic worms either wacky rigged or weedless worked slow along breaks, points and structure (jig and pigs in same areas) or deeper running rappala style baits with retrieve rate based on what fish tell you they are in the mood for...

but ask 20 anglers and you'll get 20 different answers! LOL

    good luck and happy experimenting!

Oh yeah, especially early Spring and late Fall when the water is cold.  Fires those bucket mouths right up.

Warm months, I really like plastic worms, spinner baits or the always deadly nightcrawler as long as the panfish population isn't huge.

Funny to say but i've slammed some nice large mouths on Joe's flies and even thos stupid trout magnets... But i'd probably say plastic worms and spinner baits.. I also had some good luck with Mepps Agila's #2-5s

There is no "best", only that which works! Always told my son, "use what works"! (this is for any species)!! One day (or time) it may be a worm or a minnow (real or fake), the next day something else. (fly verus spinner)!! Two fishermen could be side by side using the same bait, but how many times does one outfish the other?? Something to be said for technique and presentation! Don't be afraid to switch or vary your methods - your catch rate will go up! Yes, I've been skunked many times, but always try to evaluate what I could have done differently to make the day more succesful. Always enjoy my time on the water, but sometimes my evaluation is I should of stayed home! Tight lines - good luck!

To reinforce Jon's comment; wife and I were wadeing the bay last year ,she was getting hits every other cast on a punkinseed worm with a staight tail. I has beside her with a punkinseed worm , twister tail of a very subtle color difference from a different manufacturer and was gettin bit every 30 casts. You never know and I has very suprised of the picky attitude of the bass that day. The previous day, the bass bit just as well on both types....WF

Jon and WF do have it exactly stated 100% to the T... It's all in what the day holds, i've thrown cranks all day and nothing then switched to a inline spinner or a small jig/trailer and gotten fish...

I have re-discovered the Johnson Silver Minnow. Works as well now in the weeds as it did 30yrs ago when I first tried it. With or without a trailer. Bass & Northerens love them & they come through the weeds very well.As usual different lures for different conditions. sam

I just got back late last night from a week worth of fishing at Bobs Lake, north of Kingston Ontario. Yesterday morning on my last session on the lake, i pulled out a johnson silver minnow, gold spoon, 1 1/8 ounce. If I was fishing with that all week i probably would of doubled my pike catch numbers, that spoon has some of the best flash I have ever seen.

Btw if anyone was wondering, I was disappointed in the fishing up there, only caught 20 pike in about 50 hours worth of fishing. All under 22 inches, walleye's weren't hitting barely at all, and only caught around 40 large mouth bass, nothing over 18 inches. Meh i fished my****off, but not much reward.
