Monongahela River Thread

Thought I would start a thread for the Mon river for all fish species. Though I live closer to the Yough I fish the Mon a lot more.I fish for Channels,Flatheads,Walleye,Sauger,Musky or just about anything that will bite.I don't believe in limiting my choices to one particular fish. I fish from Fayette City to the West Virginia border. I'll make the first post. Last Friday we started out in pool 6 for Musky and we had a few followers on #10 bladed spinner blades(Musky Mayhem)but no takers. After a full 5 hours of cssting big spinnerbaits we settled in on catfishing between the two of us we caught 11 channels fron 2 to 13lbs. on cut bluegills and chicken livers(never leave home without them)all in a matter of two hours, we missed that many also.
Hope to see you on the Mon everyone!

The west fork is almost always muddy, or at least cloudy, and the east fork(Tygart) looks fantastic, but I cant seem to catch anything.  I have been fishing a lot of it that looks like the lower O.P. part of the yough.  No Avail.

I used to fish the Mon a lot because my old man lived in Charleroi.  We used to catch TONS of catfish, channels on cut bait, and flatheads on gills.  I did pretty good there on bass too but I never could get the walleye and sauger figured out.

actually mons been cleaned up and is in trouble. we lost dunkard creek due to various pollutants causing golden algea. which has recently been found in whitley creek which also dumps in mon. fish & boat been keepin close eye on mon says the dissolved metals are very high..with all the drillin being done and the wastewater plants not able to clean this brine water alot of problems to come. tried to get commission to stock pt marion pool and they said water quality is too bad.. so they are stocking another pool with better quality this nov. they tell me cheat river is main source of mine drainage and that pool may not beable to support fish much longer if things dont change. this is not gossip from our biologist and numerous write ups in local papers. so mon is far from cleaning up its goin backwards nobody cares cause of sw pa is gettin billions of dollars for drilling and nobody with athourity cares.........

If you have a boat Maxwell lock and dam can at times be a day of a lifetime when the Walleyes are on.They seem to stack up at the locks, I believe for possibly small baitfish getting pushed through or killed in the gates.Bucktail jigs, jigs and chubs and jigging spoons are my favorites.

Absolutely the mine drainage is terrible. The clean up we've noticed is the amount of garbage and sewer smell, even though it's still very noticable

Hi this is my first time on this forum. I was wondering what kind of fish could be caught in the Mon river towards Charleroi.

Used to fish the Mon at Fayette City. There was a decent smallie population as well as a few walleye. For some reason, my trips the last few years have not been as productive. Since I'm coming from the Pgh area--the drive has not been worth the time. Now, I spend most of my time fishing either the New Eagle area--good smallies and sauger--or-believe it or not--the Pgh Point area for smallies. At the point, if they are not hitting in the Mon, you just run up the Allegheny or down the Ohio--both productive.

i live close to the mckeesport area - haven't devoted time to river muskies. where are the best pools/locations for musky around me? what is the technique for the SWPA river musky? primarily cast structured/weedy shorelines or trolling? please PM, would like to talk about this!

    ..edit:

    found this online:
"Three of the better areas include Pool 3, the Maxwell Pool and the Pittsburgh Pool. Pool 3 extends from Locks and Dam 3 at Elizabeth upriver to Locks and Dam 4 at Charleroi. The Maxwell Locks and Dam creates the Maxwell Pool, which extends upriver to the Grays Landing L&D. The Pittsburgh Pool runs from the point in Pittsburgh upriver to Locks and Dam 2 at Braddock. Each of these three pools averages about 1,400 acres.

The pools of the Monongahela River are somewhat like small lakes. Weedy flats are present in some locations. Tributary areas tend to provide some of the best habitat. Current-deflecting gravel bars are often located at such places."

I guess for me the pool 3 would be the best? Has anyone ever fished this for musky? Anyone willing to provide me with more information? Thanks!

Hey Maniac.......I'm looking to buy another casting rod for musky......don't want to pay big $$$$ for a "name" rod, but I still want something that can handle 50 lb. braid. Any suggestions?

My wife told me that if I didn't stop fishing every day, she'd leave me. Some days, I really miss her.

absolutly....go to gander mtn..they have gander mtn musky rods called competiter series they are like 30 bucks. i bought one last yr used it liked it so much went back and bought 6 more. i use them for casting and have 4 of them for trolling caught several skies on them, just as good as the exspensive jobs..i think u would be more than satisfied.. they are 7ft i know the in thing now is the 8ft castin rods, i still use the 7ft mainly cause my rod locker doesnt hold 8ft rods and i dont like taking rods out of boat every time i go.

Im guessing that wasnt rigged for skis, cause everyone knows you should use a quick-strike rig.

Did you make it out Friday night like you were talkin about mm? Was pretty nice, fog wasnt bad.

I heard the thunder & saw some lightening in the distance, did pass us by fairly close, before i left the house but never got a drop here that night. I waited till the rumbling quit before heading out so i knew i wouldnt get caught in it, but didnt need to because it totally missed us. I didnt get on the water till around midnight, fished till just after dawn. Musta been the rain that added to the fog where you were at. It was just very thin and wispy all night for us.

    Maniac,

I made the mistake last saturday morning of trying to fish down the river.

I got an early start and was at TM by five am, only to find out there were already 30 other people in front of me to launch.  I guess there was a bass tourney going on.

How often do they have Bass Tourney at TM and how can I find out when they are scheduled to prevent this from happening in the future.
