Rod Holders

Alright.. so heres the dilemma. I have plastic rod holders on my 1775 Lund Classic right now but they don't work too well with big dipsy rods. We finally bought a downrigger for the back left corner away from the swim platform. It has two rod holders so that solves some of the problem. But i need at least one metal rocket launcher style holder on each side for those big dipsys. Im lookin at the single big jon holders and the ones made by tite lok. Does anyone have another suggestion that wont break the bank? All help is appreciated

I had Berts on my Grady White and loved them. I have Tite-loc on my 16 aluminum boat and I do not recommend them because they require the use of an allen wrench to adjust them. Both brands are very well made, I just don't like having to use the allen wrench on the Tite-Locs

One recommendation I would make is that if you have a nice boat (like a Lund), don't skimp on rod holders. When the time comes to sell your boat (for that bigger Lund), an extra couple hundred bucks spent on quality accessories really helps.

Thanks for the advice. I just realized that the allen wrench may be a pain. I like the big jons and traxstechs im gonna look deeper into those two.

I'll second the RAM tubes. Built like a tank and
infinitely adjustable, mine have served me well for years.

If money wasn't an object I'd recommend Cisco holders because of their versatility as well as their durability. But I like the fact that the Traxstech holders adjust quickly and positively without having to screw/twist them down. Just pull the plunger and tilt to desired angle. They are also very heavy-duty. I have mine mounted on a 3' track on each side. Do some searching and you should be able to pick them up for about $70 each plus track or trolling bar. I thought FishUSA carried them, but they don't now.

Ive been looking on the traxstech site and my lund has the sport track groove so i could get the plate for the t-bolt which is their new mounting option. Im just not sure that i would be able to get the cover on if i used those because they would interfere. I like the design though, but i cant make up my mind because it seems like every holder has some little disadvantage for my situation.

Someone has a couple sets of BigJon triple rod holders for sale on the OGF site.

I prefer flush mounts and have a couple of tigress holders that mount on the rail, they work really well.

I am leaning towards big jons. Not sure if i wanna jump straight into triples cause we usually run four rods tops. $200 isnt bad i may give him a call.

Check out the Folbe rod holders.  I use them on my sport track and pull boards and dipseys without any problems.  You can adjust them to any angle including straight up.  You'll probably need the extensions to get them above the gunwale.  Worth a look IMO.

You rteally shouldcheck out Craig Rod Holders from Hermanie PA they are truly the best! Ran them on my charter boat and they are on all my boats now. They have the most positions and are very easy to use. Poor Richards sells them not sure about Fish Erie though. They should cause there the best.

If money is no object buy Ciscos the added manueverability is a plus. For a solid reasonably priced option Big Jons are the ticket, I run em and 25#+ Kings On Lake O are yet to rip em off so them Walleye logs in Erie certainly won't.

I have broken the scotty's and the berkley plastics. The toughest on earth are the Down easters I have 6 of those and two sets of fishlander triples. Like both a lot.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Ciscos are the best...you got vectors, big jons and tite-loks will also do the job....Ciscos are not cheap but I guess they a guaranteed for life against defect from what I've read. My Big Jons do just fine.

However, if you go plastic, buy nothing but Fish-Ons....they don't break! I quit using the Down Easts because of the lack of adjustability. They are strong though.

Have to mention Craig Rod Holders one more time, Go check them out much nicer than all mentioned above! Simple to use and clearly the heaviest ones built. You could tow a boat tying off to them and they have the most positions. Did I mention lifetime guaranteed also.

I just purchased a new boat and am going to replace the holders that are currently on it. I thought about going with either Ciscos, Traxstechs, or Craigs. As I mentioned above, I currently have Traxstechs on my Monark, and I love them. I've also used Ciscos and they are sweet too (and a little bit prettier, and more expensive). I've never used Craigs, but everyone that I know that has used them seems pretty impressed with them.
The problem is, unless I'm missing something, in order to install using a track you have to purchase a Traxstech, Bert's, or Big Jon track to be used with Cisco or Craig holder...because they don't manufacture their own tracks? Even on Ciscos and Craigs own website they don't list an available track, they just say their track mounts will fit most of their competitor's tracks??? From a product marketing point of view, that seems like corporate suicide...forcing your customers to purchase part of their system from your competitor before (possibly) completing the purchase with you. It makes more sense for me, if I have to purchase the track from Traxstech, to get the whole system from them. If I'm wrong with this scenario, someone can set me straight.
I'd like to purchase them this week, but I can't analyze the price differences until I can figure out what tracks I have to buy. And BTW, I know I don't need to mount them with a track, but I like the flexibility and expandability a track system offers.

Cisco has the same life time guarantee and are built better I have had them side by side and while the Craigs are nice no comparsion to the Ciscos. The Ciscos are also well proven on many more boats as I have only seen a few with the Craigs and the Ciscos are ALL over Ohio waters of Erie.

I like the Ciscos but dont think they are nearly as well built as Craigs as well asI know Craig Hopkins personally and you won't find a better person to deal with! I guess on top of the quality keeping the business with a local person is why I wouldn't buy any other rod holders. He capms right in Erie with the fellow fisherman. I think they do sell the tracks for them, but not sure. They definetly fit the Traxtech tracks though. I would not buy Traxtech holders for sure. I have owned Traxtech, Berts, Craig, Big Jon and my good friend has Cisco i don't like the way you loosen them to lay them down. Once Craigs are set they cannot move there is no way of bumping a lever and making them drop. Berst were nice because of the ratchet but not close to how heavy duty the Craigs are. i broke 2 sets of traxtechs, and the Big Jons were ok but not as versatile as Craig and not even close in heavy duty the Craigs are. Here is a picture of the rig I sold with all the Craig holders and rocket launcher. My Lund has Craigs on it now and I swear you would rip the side of the boat off before you would come close to hurting the rod holders!

Also Buckets has switched to all Craig Rod Holders and he has many rod holders through the years on his boats. They all work but some arre much better than others and my opinion are Craigs the best. Good luck with your decision! Happy Fishing
