The carp problem...

first post- a rant, if you'll oblige...

The carp in the finger lakes need to go. Problem is, no one wants to eat them. And no one knows what to do with multiple 20+ lb dead fish. I wouldn't mind pitching in and spending a day 'carpin', but what to do with all the dead carp? Answer- DEC offers carp disposal dumpsters at boat launches and public fishing access points. I am not kidding. They need to have a carp derby. Or a spear fishing contest. Electrofishing contest. SOMETHING!

are you guys going pilgram on those carp and planting them in your garden, under the veggies?

"A Homewood man led police on an hourlong car chase that ended with a crash injuring three officers.

"The car was driving itself," Wright said. "The car has a GPS. It's a Lincoln Navigator. They drive themselves. I wasn't running nowhere."

The lake is Waneta Lake in the fingerlakes region, between the southern ends of Seneca and Keuka Lake. It's a shallow, weedy, ~700 acre lake- great LMB and Tiger Musky fishing, but the carp have been causing problems, as they have in pretty much all the finger lakes. They disturb the spawning nests of panfish and bass, allegedly as well as feeding on their eggs. They also stir up the water like hell- I was out yesterday and it hadn't rained very hard in quite a while, yet the water looked like weak coffee. When they run up the tributaries in the spring they ruin the rainbow trout fishing. I lost a bunch of flies and leaders this year to carp. They are so shallow I am tempted to get my bow and do some bow-fishing, but it's hard to find areas 1) on public land and 2) less than 500 feet from houses to comply with state carp bow-fishing regs. I think they should loosen those restrictions as well. And again, I have no idea what to do with huge fish carcasses. Even hauling more than just a couple of them to my car would be very difficult.

    sounding awfully needy snyder...lol

As far as the 'carp problem'...don't know what to tell you man...
None of the lakes around these parts have a significant enough population to have much affect on other species.
That's not to say there aren't a lot of carp...there are.

If there's as many as you describe...not much you can do....
except open up a carp scale biscuit factory...
or maybe a Pennsyltucky Fried Karp...
in some foreign nation who loves eating karps.

With all due respect Mr Longcast what you are seeing is the carp spawning. Every year they gather in certain sections of lakes and spawn for a week. It will look like coffee as you describe and then get back to normal. Some lakes are overpopulated but yours may not be the case. All the carp will gather to spawn so you are probably seeing the entire lakes carp population in that spot so keep that in mind. If you say you have a good bass and pike population that will keep the carp numbers low as well because when the carp spawn the bass and pike feed off of the car as they hatch hence is a great food source for them. I notice on a lot of lakes with carp problems the predators such as bass, pike and musky are often overharvested so if there are nothing to eat the carp spawn then they reach full size simple as that.
As far as eating bass eggs. I have to chuckle and not at you but the fact that its often not the case. Even though a carp is big they act like a scared little kid. They spook easy and are not very agressive. If you have a bass on a nest and you watch when something comes near it a bass will chase it off. A carp will not beat up a bass lol It will spook away. Also in terms of bass eggs there are other fish on the lake that do enjoy eggs so its not like its only carp that would feed on them.

In terms of fly fishing when you caught one didn't you enjoy the fight? By now you figured I am into carp fishing. I always hear guys wanting to catch big fish and most guys are catch and release that I know including myself. I go out and have fun catching them and they put up a nice fight. I still fish for everything else but I enjoy carp fishing most for the fun of it.
