Tying flies on line

I have a question, Which would be the best knot to tie flies onto a fly rod, im not sure of the proper lingo. I have seen the improved clench knot used alot but wanted to know which would be the best. Im new to the fly fishin scene but gotta start some where, and that some where is getting a fly on the line.

Thanks

Which ever one you can do well and repeatedly.

Try a couple and use which ever one you can do most consistently.

I use the improved clinch knot, but Pete's right. Try a few and stick with what works for you.

    Good luck!!

X3 and the animated knots site is terrific. I think the Orvis site has a similar section. Pay attention to seating leader/fly knot. When I was a beginner I struggled with the knot slipping. Making off with a new fly and leaving a curly cue at the end of your leader is the fish's way of giving the angler the finger.

Get one of these and practice a little! You can also join two lines together - make a loop - nail knot, etc. Well worth the money and effort!

Clinch works fine.  Also, if you can master http://www.netknots.com/html/rapala_knot.html   this knot works well to add natural movement to either a nymph or streamer by allowing it to move and circulate around the loop. Give it a shot, and try to keep the loop decently small.

If your clinch knot is not working, you're not tying it right.  It's the only knot I use for tying on flies, and even use it for adding droppers with 6x, and I never have problems.  My surgeons knots never give me problems anymore either, though I will admit they did at first.

"Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets downstream, mend and wait out each fly swing, over and over again, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates the angler to the role, not of nemesis as it should be, but of butler."
