Trolling spring steel

A pal at work and his cousin spend a lot of fishing time in the spring trolling the "pocket" off Hammermill for steelies. They set up much like you would for early walleye on Lake Erie. Boards, plugs, jet/spoons.

While the water is cold, this area and the bay as well hold more steel than some guys realize.

Anyone else do this?

I really never target steel, but they are fun to catch while trolling and we almost always run into them in the fall while trolling for eyes. I may try for some lakers this spring though...

We ran into a couple trolling last fall also and what a blast! I wouldn't spend the day doing it for fear of damaging fish I wasn't intending to keep but a few would be great, then set up for something different for the rest of the day.

The spring brown fishing should be getting better off PA tribs. Many places have good spring brown fishing. I hope PA gets a run of spring browns going. One fine spring we will get surprised.
