Boat battery ?

I always carried 2 batteries on my old 24' boat but now I have a 19' Starcraft. My question is do I buy a deep cycle or just a marine starting battery with a high reserve. I have a 90 H 4 cycle and run a handheld GPS, and fishfinder. Thanks for any input.

Optima yellow, red or blue starting
Way better than a standard battery
If you don't have a trolling motor deep cycle does not matter

Good answer from Pghmarty. If you do decide to go the deep cycle route, be sure to get a deep cycle charger, there is a difference.

Run I would get a starter/deep cycle marine battery. On my boat the nav lights run off the same battery as the motor does.So when I do alot of night fishing it will drain the starter battery down to the point, I have to pull start or switch the batteries. which sucks at night on the water.Marty is right those batteries kick butt Dave

Depending on the amount of accessories and electronics, you may want to stay with two batteries.

As for the charger, I use an onboard two bank charger and keep them on it all winter. Just have to keep an eye on fluid levels. I have it mounted on the wall in my shop, didn't like the idea of the gasses collecting in the boat and corroding everything.

Two batteries if you can fit, or like most said, one good duel purpose group 24 battery. Don't be cheap on it.

On a smaller boat where weight is an issue a single Optima battery is the way to go.
On a larger boat with room 2 standard 800-1000 CCA batteries are the same price as 1 Optima
My Checkmate had 4 batteries -this was needed for the 2000W stereo

A large new main battery was barely strong enough to lift the sun deck
I switched to an Optima and it moved a lot faster with no problem then used the other new battery as my #2
In the front I had 2 6V Optima inline closer to the head unit and amps-these look like three cans in a row
Running #4 wire from the back was not enough to give it enough power so that they would not overheat and shut off

A motorcycle or preferably jet ski battery is large enough to run a fishfinder, anchor and bow lights all night.
Either have it switched or use an isolator to save main battery.

My 20' jet boat with a big block Chevy did not have an alternator
I had 1 battery for the starter and ignition and another totally separate battery and fuse block for lights, stereo and fishfinder.
Just plugged in onboard charger when I got home

When doing your own wiring use marine grade tinned wire(automotive will work but corrosion is a problem)
Never use household wire-it is too stiff and will break.
Use a guide for what size wire you need for how many watts at so many feet of run
    GO A SIZE LARGER
Soldered connections and shrink wrap are much better than butt connectors, never us wire nuts!

i went to 27s on my big boat do to the air cond and all the other power hogs and some times the wife uses the microwave to heat up something but a good 24 size will do if you go with the opt batt you can mount it in almost any position but you will want a different charge do to the chargeing rate of agm and flooded another idea for ele is a sealed batt 12volt for wire fense or emer exit lights cost around 20 to 40 and can buy them at lows /depot/tractor supply i have a few friends that run that seperate on there fish finders to stop interfer from the eng
