im in, the fly will be "the pellet." I'm being totally cereal. I have brown globug yarn for just this fly. However, I will NOT be in Pa for zoofest 2010.

take a piece of composite fly rod cork rings and cut out small cylinders of them. Push over the hook eye after putting a small hole inside and zap a gap on the hook. Works great for the PA brown fly hatch at local clubs and the first day of stocking.

You can also spin a small amount of dark deer or moose hair on the hook and trim it like a pellet. Works very well on early season stockies.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

buy a bag full of small non ground up coffee beans, scrape out a little bit of the center and hot glue it to a scud hook. been reading alot of the pellet fly and san jaun worm being frowned upon! purist go figure.

This kid is fly fishings future and all you guys can do is bust his balls for being excited about trout season. Perhaps he is unable to get to the pristine native trout waters you all must fish on a regular basis. Come on I know most of you fish a lot of "stocked" PA waters. What makes the stocked laurel highland streams that much better than the local streams we ALL learned to fish on. Give the kid a break before you scare him off.....

Shame on every last one of you !!

    RD,

    LMAO!!!!!

Shame on YOU, for calling me a sarcastic liar.

I was 100% serious with mine, WV fish love them, so I hear.  I honestly heard that you take a small handful of pea gravel, and toss it in a hole, and then toss 2 pellet flies in, and they go bananas.  Came straight from the guy who owns the fly shop i go to(I will PM his name and email address if you would like to verify that I am telling the truth)

I laughed about it, then thought about a few cold winter days, fingers numb, when nothing seemed to work, and bought a bag of the brown-tan globug yarn.  I have yet to do it myself, but, not too much pride here.

I mean, I would rather catch a fish on a "bug," but whats the difference, really?  He is a kid who wants some flies that work on the first day.  Would mine not work?

You really chapped my****RD, I don't appreciate being called a liar.  Kind of a pet-peeve.  I am sure none of the other guys do either.   Geeeshhhh, I am going to shut up, I am sorry to go on this much about it!

tyler... never called anyone a liar. Actually really meant no disprespesct to anyone. I know that there are guys that fish pellet flies. Ive actually even seen someone using the coffee bean thing. I'm not one to turn my nose up at ANY fly that will catch fish be it an attractor or a bug but I just sensed a HUGE level of sarcasm and dissent about "zoofest" 2010. The kid's new to the scene and his excitement about opening day should be regarded with admiration not jokes and discouragement. Yes, the PA fish commission and local anglers alike have turned opening day and the stocking into a zoo but we should all respect the resource and be happy that someone is willing to dump the "pelletheads" into our local fisheries. If not for these stocked fish how much actual water would we still have fish? Even if not on opening day, most of us still utilize all these waters... . .

    Anyhow now I'm rambling.

MY original point was, encourage the boy and be happy he's willing to fish and not out sellin dope or something even worse. Calling the opener a "zoo" and putting down the fish that some have no choice but to pursue just degrades us all.

So . . Shame on me .. Shame on you .. and shame on the Mods for banning Young Guru !!

    RD,

Dont think anyone was being "cute" here.  I tie a brown suckerspawn for pellets that crushes them.  Yep, looks like a pellet.  Maybe raz was jerking his chain a little but the rest of us seem to be serious.  Never know what you will get in one of these swaps that will work and make you say.."hmmmmmm".
Lighten up bud.  Your defense of the kid is admirable, but unwarranted at this point id say.

seriously, what other type of fly would one need for opening day fishing the "zoo"?

Yeah I was being dead serious.

I use the pellet fly all the time, its literally matching the hatch at one particular place that I fish that has feeders above the stream.

Think I give a crap about being a purist?  Nah... ill ice fish in a simms jacket and even get skein and egg juice on it, could care less.

And Ill also never hesitate to tie on the pellet when there are stocked trout in the water.  Maybe some of you people like to romanticize about fly fishing, and that's all fine and dandy, but I'm not proud.

To me, its exactly what Loomis said.  I go to catch fish, just prefer to use a fly rod to do it.  I will use whatever means necessary with that rod though to accomplish my goal.

Loomis smells... I cracked him in the jaw last week for trying to steal my painkillers and butterfingers, knocked him out dudes.

one word if you're not throwing flies: powerworm

"Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets downstream, mend and wait out each fly swing, over and over again, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates the angler to the role, not of nemesis as it should be, but of butler."

Mo's cork on his 6wt carries a heavy stench of egg sac juice.

The moment of truth. Where all other things unconsciously melt away from our minds the instant a fish takes our fly. We stand there on the water with wide eyes, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope

no the coffee bean is what is used on beavers prestigious dog food feeder streams.

I see nothing wrong with people coming up with a fly that catches more fish. Ive never once read at fly fishermans paradise that it says "pellet flies" arent allowed.

Remember they are just trout KEEP IT simple isnt that what you said loomis?

i just dont understand why purist call san juan worms as a bad fly. Dont purist use flys that are to look exactly like what the fish are feeding on? so a san juan worm mimics a worm that falls in the stream its artificial enough to get a trout to bite with out bait being chucked.

and yes im serious on my maggot clusters.

Coffee beans work when the trout become more pellet selective.  You will get refusals after the trout become wary of whats food and whats not.

Glo-bugs and wrapped brown honey bug chenille work okay, but only if the trout are feeding on sinking pellets, which in most cases is not the case.

When you look at a pellet dry you see it is dark brown and rather small.  when it absorbs water it becomes tan colored and slightly larger, it also hangs just below the surface, not directly on it.

Tan composite cork imitates the pellet the best because it looks like a water absorbed pellet with rough edges and hangs just below the surface.  It is also very, very durable.  On the one place that I do use a pellet fly, the trout are not as easy to catch as you think...they really do know the difference between real or fake, even in fast water.

Also, if you are carp fishing and chumming pellets, this pattern works great as well.  Nothing like a rising carp.
