I would say its a losing battle trying to catch them during the spawn. They have there minds on other things obviously. The spawn typically lasts a week somtimes a little longer. Before the spawn you will catch the largest and also fall. Before spawn they are full of eggs and fall time because they put on a lot of winter weight.I would say about a week before they actually spawn they start to travel to there spawning locations and after that they change to there summer pattern.Hope this helps you some.

As far as when thats hard to judge.Every lake is different and just like bass they all go different times during the spring based on weather, temp and so on.

The pole is funner in my opinion. lol They are not an agressive fish like a pike or bass in turns of charging at a bait.. Even though they have hit lures before they are more of an opurtunist when it comes to feeding. For bass if you get a bait anywhere near the nest they will attack where a carp will not do this. The smaller ones are easier to catch but if you ever watch the underwater videos on youtube you can see just how hard they are to catch. They are picky and can eject baits without you ever knowing it.

seems like you got it right takeagillpill. the week of june 7th seems to be a good time to find carp rolling. easy pickens for an arrow flinger. have you ever gone at night and lit it up ? lots of fun. redneck farmboy = bowfishermen? sounds better than being some sort of half **** vampire.

yeah ive gone at night too and its a blast. i use a rechargable 2,000,000 candle power spotlight. but the bugs are crazy! you have to scan quickly, find one, then get your bow ready reflash em and nail em. if you leave the light on bugs fly all over your face and the light. good time!

What time of year do carp typically spawn? Are there more effective ways to target them during this time period than any other time of the year.

When and where varies depending on conditions as already mentioned.  Typically, common carp will spawn once water temps reach low 60s deg. F.  Carp can spawn sooner in the shallower areas of a water, since these can warm up quicker, and may be seen spawning a little later on the same lake around deeper water.
In these part in W. PA, I've noticed carp usually spawn from mid-May to mid-June depending on weather.

As far as targeting during this time, well that depends what you're into------sport, competitions, for the table, fertilizer, whacking as many as ya can 'cause ya hate carp?  Sticking 'em may be the most effective way to "target" them when they're stacked up spawning.
As far as angling goes, fly fishing for 'em may take some work, but could be productive if you're good at stalking them.  Bait fishing for them is probably the most effective to get 'em when they're spawning, but it can be tuff at times.
I've had times when they were spawning one day and the catching was tough, but baited the area up and the next day I had a feeding frenzy going on and was rippin' them.  Not all carp spawn at the same time, so it's usually possible to find some feeders (especially the ones just coming off the spawn) mixed in.
Some claim a good "spawn bait" is good for catching them during the spawn, but that's another subject.
If all else fails, ya can always snag 'em.

i bought an awesome spear a long time ago when the hotspot bait shop was still open. i put it on a nice long wooden broom handle and was ready to go, everytime i speared a carp (or hmmm tried to) one of the points broke off. threw it in the trash and went to garage sales lookin for a couple old compounds. never looked back!

sayer's is just an all around good fishing lake, the bass fishermen seem to like us shooting carp. the park rangers are never in your face and with unlimited horsepower on the water, it still fishes well, unlike other lakes in the area.

Well, I'm not an archer.  Is there a hook and line category by chance?  I've fished quite a few carp angling tourneys over the years, including the one they used to have at Pymatuning that had both bowfishing and hook and line categories------I fished it the last two years they had it in '95 and '96.  My avatar is a scan of the logo for the '95 Pymatuning Carp-a-thon.
I might have to check out Sayers either way tho.

i'm sad to say there's no hook and line category in this contest but that will be brought up down there this year. sounds like a cool concept. if you like #'s over size than sayer's is 4 you.

Yeah that would be cool if it could be a multi-method tourney like the Pymatuning Carp-a-thon was------- I had fun at those two tourneys I fished there.  Could call it a hook 'n shoot or stick 'n rip.  Sayers sounds like it's like Pymatuning carp-wise------plenty of smaller carp.

the carp rut calender says that the rut will be between the last week of may till the second week of june. get your trail cams out early to see where the best big carp action is. hang your stands early and watch your wind.

carpkiller, quit bowfishin, that ain't never gonna happen. these people that don't like it should show up at the tournaments and speak their minds. that would be funny. i'm sure redbeard would be happy to see them ,not 2 mention the 100 other hard core bowfishermen.
