Volvo Outdrive Mechanic?

Have a Volvo Duo Prop outdrive that needs seals and power trim work.

Have had the Sportcraft 232 for 2 years and this is the first time I've needed to have anything worked on. I figured you guys could save me some time and money by pointing me in the right direction. I live on the Pa/Ohio line so something on the east side of Ohio or western Pa. is preferable. Thanks....

What the Hell Joe?  I didn't know you were having issues....I have to get my bellows done this spring...mine are getting pretty cracked up!  Also having some custom work done so that I can easily drain the oil...

    SUNF,

What custom work are you getting done? Having the oil drain run through hull?

That's always my least favorite (well one of them anyway) maintenance things. I don't like using the pump to suck the oil out the dip stick tube, just don't think it gets everything out. I have been using heavy plastic bags under the engine so I can pull the plug and drain every last drop, works pretty well and never spills a drop.

My bellows are fine. Look like new actually. Will be a bummer to pay for new ones but obviously I will when I have it apart.

My problem was water in the gear lube when I last drained it. That and a trim problem. Pump works and the lower unit goes up and down properly.... but it doesn't hold position. Comes down very slowly on its own. Since I have more than one problem it's time to dive in and get everything done. Glad I didn't pull it apart for one thing only to have the other happen later. That would have sucked.

I don't mind the fluid extractor. It's actually cheaper to drain it, add a quart of oil and drain again than to have the work done. I've never drained through the hull.

Do you have the DP drive too? Ever thought of doing the bellows yourself? Volvo is a piece of cake, and the merc takes a little longer, but is no big deal.. Theres even a step by step video on youtube of the process.

The pump certainly never gets all the oil out and that really bothers me.  The pump I own is top of the line and it is medeocre at best.  My mechanic is going to machine a new drain plug for me that will have a ball valve on it then attach about a 3' piece of hose that will lay in the hull under the motor.  When I want to drain ALL the oil, I'll simply push the hose through the boat drain plug, open the valve and drain the oil out through the back of the boat.  Draining the oil shouldn't be such a chore so I want to make it simple and easy to do.  I can let you know how it turns out.

seals are easy to do i would think bellows are in order but your call as the leak down its going to be a ck valve for the pump at worse case its a wiper leaking and you will see a scar on the jack how to ck run your finger nail on the shiny part all around if it stops you got a scar and need to replace a jack and that is easy to do

I have an old boat with a Volvo outdrive. The outdrive was a piece of cake to work on. Replaced all the seals myself and no longer have water mixing in with the oil. Finding the leak is also a piece of cake. Drain yer oil, take an air hose and pump about 8 lbs. of pressure into the drive, take some soapy water and a brush and soap up all of the seal locations and look fer the bubbles. I also have a similar problem with the hydraulics in the power tilt. Without getting into a ton of money and headaches. I just simply tie my outdrive up when I'm trailering the boat. Takes me 2 secs. Problem solved!

    Shutup,
If you can, attach your hose through the drain hole to the plug with a piece of stainless wire. It made using my drain hose 20x easier.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I had another thought about the water getting in. Have you ever replaced the O-rings on the drain and fill screws? DO NOT use rubber O-rings, buy the plastic rings. For some reason the rubber rings don't seal out the water.
