ATTN: King Davy - Genny Acess

Been off the boards for awhile and wondered what happened to the situation at the Seth Green acess at the Gorge. Any news would be appreciated. I remember something about some work being done that would limit access. What's up ?  Thanks    Dave

I went down about 06:30 this AM and the gates were locked.  Looks like there was some foenm of equipment on the road and a sign saying something to the effect that access is prohibited.

This morning I went down again.  Talked to the security guard.  She said that the main gate should be open every day at 06:00 AM.  She was going to talk to someone to try and find out why the gate was locked @ 06:
    30 yesterday and today.

As far as access all the way down to the pump house is concerned...she said that the work will be on-going through next spring and that you won't be able to get all the way down via the road until the work is completed.  Only option now is to walk down to the river via the dirt road and make your way up along the river bank.

On a side note...there was a sizeable rockslide on the westside of the river that took down some of the kayak cabling.  Lucky nobody was under those boulders when they went...some were huge.

The urban legend from a few years back was that there was a person under the bus size rock at the tail end of the power plant pool that "calved" off one spring.  While most of this kind of thing should happen during freeze thaw periods, I've gone down the road in the early afternoon and found wheelbarrow sized rocks in the road on the way out that weren't there on the way in. One reason for fishing in spots away from the gorge face!

But it's good to hear that access isn't completely cut off.  I could get there with a boat, but that's more work than the walk!

Yes.  It is now a dirt/gravel road that I believe the Kayakers use to haul gear down to the river with.

Another update...... Talked to the City managers last night about the Genny access. The plan is to allow people access to the Seth Green island path ...which is the path Dave M mentioned above. And access to the upper river would have to be done by walking the river edge.

However...we have a concern that I asked the City to check on with RG&E. If you walk up river along the edge...those that have done that...know it's not a simple stroll up top....a lot of climbing up and over rocks. My concern is if they have to let a bunch of water loose ....will people have problems getting back down river to the walk out at the Seth Green path. We talked about allowing anglers to be able to climb up to the road in the closed section...with the security staff able to usher them back out through the security gate they have set up half way down the road.

Sounds like this capital project is going on through the spring. The other thing that Dave M...ran into was the gates being locked after 6 AM. Just asked the city to make sure the security Staff working for RG&E make the area that we can traverse open on time.

Again...i'll get back to us...if I get any other info. Sorry the City and RG&E just never got that meeting together...we got three or four scheduled meetings...then they got canceled. But hopefully we'll have a plan to get anglers out of the gorge...if the water jumps up two or three feet...in areas where it will be difficult to climb back down to the path.

King Davy, thanks for the update. Know what you mean about simple stroll - fought one up and over the rocks with my line tangled for about 15 minutes (not fun). Might just pass on the gorge this year.   Dave

Sounds like a perfect business opportunity.  Moose and Squirrel Kayak shuttle service... for when you really gotta get there!!!  LOL

I heard from Mr Farr at the City today that there is a plan to fence the area of the road all along the top of the bank.  If this could be done in such a way as to allow double file passage betweeen the guardrail and the fence, the project is protected and the access, at least around those huge boulders to the second path, could be opened.  Just a thought.
