Releases

Now I'm not a very "technical" hunter.  A shoot/use what works for me.

I am currently hunting with a Winn free Flight Release:

Sometimes I find that it gets in the way, especially when taking a chew. lol

A friend suggested switching to this:

He says it prevents punching the trigger.

Any thoughts?

I'd be afraid of dropping any release that wasn't strapped to my wrist. I have a tendency to drop things out of the tree. My list thus far includes, my quiver, a 2 way radio, a flashlight, and a thermos. The thermos was the worst, because it was a glass/plastic vacuum style that was full of coffee. It sounded like a cannon going off. I digress...

I bought the scott itty bitty goose release. I can tuck it out of the way, since there's a nylon strap between the caliper and wrist strap instead of a metal shaft like most calipers. Here's a link so you can see what I mean: http://www.scottarchery.com/archery-releases/single-caliper-releases-little-bitty-goose.php  I usually just tuck it under my jacket sleeve while i'm climbing. You could do the same while putting in your chew.

I've been thinking of buying a back tension release for 3D. I've heard the same as you about not punching the trigger.

Ironhed the release you got a picture of is the trail boss.It cost like 170 at cabelas.I been wanted to change my whole setup.I read about these releases they say that the trail boss is really noisy for hunting but great for 3D and competiton. If i was you i would look at the pro diamond extreme it cost 100 at cabelas is rated for hunting very quit.I used a loop release one time years ago an that's the last time i used it drew half way back an the bow went off.I'm not sure if it was a back tension release or what but i wore a walt on my forearm for a month. Not to change the subject but what is the best peep sight i can use for hunting without a tube?I been lokking at the superball peeps.

Thanks for tip on the release.  I did not know they were an option.

I don't drop things often but I do plan on buying two, one for the bow and one to keep in the pack, just in case of a drop or mechanical failure.

I will look into the Pro Diamond.  I will not buy from Cabelas.
How is a "strapless" release noisy?  Excuse my ignorance because I have never shot with one.
Mine can make some noise if I don't take a couple of precautions, including putting it on tightly, correct positioning over my glove, making sure watch is clear, etc..  Oh yeah, the velcro can be a pain in the rear, too.

ironhead i shoot a hand release called a carter target 4 i also have 2 others . in my opinion they are the best for hunting hook on the bow and hang the bow back up never had any problems with it falling of it is kinda like the trail boss you have posted above just smaller and more accurate.

Drake you sound like me in my treestand.  I swear I drop at least 1 thing every time I go out.  In fact three days in a row I dropped my scent spray bottle.  I have even been known to walk to my treestand while my bow was still waiting for me in the back of my car.  I guess that is how it goes for some of us.

Ironhed I would suggest a scott trigger release.

Can you(or someone) explain how they are loud?

I won't buy from Cabelas because I prefer to support the small guys.

    Hed,

Unless you are set on the back tension style of release, check into the fletchmatic or fletchmate line.  They make both rope and mechanical releases.  Very well made, very durable, quiet, etc.  They are all Ive used for years...

Be prepared for some frustration if you plan on the backtension. Takes awhile (and a few times punching yourself in the face) to get used to. They are used mainly for target shooters although some use them for hunting as well. You can get a similar strapless style that actually has a trigger button on it. The idea behind the backtension is that the release comes as a surprise thus elimination some bad habits that might occur when actually hitting a trigger. Takes a bit of practice to master.

ironhead they are not loud at all if you would look up big name shooters 98 percent shoot carter or stan hand held release they are more accurate. i have hunted with straight back tension while hunting but switched over to a carter thumb release it makes just as much noise as a trigger when putting it on the bow string and the noise of the bow covers up any sound that the release would make.
