Crossguns

Just got back from helping a fellow line in his new "middle of the price range" crossgun and am I ever impressed. The guys that sold it to the PGC as comparable to a bow were lying through their teeth but then I guess everyone knew it. With a range finder and shooting sticks I wouldn't hesitate to take it woodchuck hunting much less deer hunting. Fifteen minutes of shooting and I was shooting 3" groups with expandables out to the max distance the scope would allow (70 yds)with enough force to punch through a deers ribcage. Yep-it's no different than a bow allright, A ladder stand with a rest overlooking a grain field or food plot and it's more acccurate than a scoped shotgun or muzzleloader. I will say it's not something I would want to take still hunting but what a machine.

Whats a crossgun??  If you are referring to a crossbow, would you be comfortable shooting a live deer at 70 yards with it?

If you don't mind me asking what make and model?

Claiming something is a bow that stores none of its energy in the physical strength of the shooter always makes for a funny conversation.   Isn't it great here on fishusa D, no moderator that wants to control what is said about crossbows.   I happen to like arrowrifle the best.  Bings has a bunch of funny ones.

I haven't seen another crossbow hunter since that guy that bought a crossbow to expand his shooting distance.   I didn't ask him his max range.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

On the range thing, no doubt crossbows can be shot with very good accuracy with little practice as far as one feels like shooting.

I always advise those that ask to start close and work your way out on live targets.  As with vertical equipment, the drop of the arrow, the time of flight,  and the noise of the shot must be factored into any shot opportunity as shooting paper and shooting deer are two different scenarios.  IMO 40 yards is it with me on live targets but I understand that shots are taken at much further ranges with success.

Elevate discussions ?  yikes !   If I talk about my buddy that hadn't shot his broadheads from his bow preseason, then skinned a buck the first day, and how irresponsible that was, it'd stay.  Now, if it was my buddy is the same situation with a crossbow, I'd be in trouble.

So I'm not so sure it's only about elevating discussions.    Same with the other green board.. can't post pics of rifle kills.. it's a bowsite !!!   But anyway, doesn't matter.  Is was it is.   My original point .. Kudo's to Hed and fishusa.

I challenge you to outshoot my scoped muzzleloader at 70+ yards with a crossbow. I own both and my muzzleloader is accurate at over 100 yards. Most crossbow manufacturers do not consider a 70 yd. shot ethical. I do agree, however, that my crossbow will outshoot my compound bow @ 30+ yards.

Scoped shotguns are legal in Pa. To my knowledge scoped muzzleloaders are not. Anyway, the point is I was shooting 3" groups out to 70 yds after shooting it for 15 minutes using expandables and believe with a dead rest the bow is capable of much better than that. DPMS- I think you know my feeling on crossguns in archery season so I have no desire to promote the brand. The owner can't draw a compound due to surgery so took advantage of the crossbow. As with any weapon the effective range varies with the skill of the individual and situation but a standing 70 yd shot in my case with one of those is a high percentage kill. I have read a lot on then during our debates and watched others shoot but this is the first time I spent a lot of time shooting one myself. Don't know what to call them but a bow they aren't.

Can you tell me the poundage or the rated rated fps if you have that information? Compound or recurve?  Just trying to see performance wise how the bow you shot stacks up against others.

S-10 I thought scoped muzzleloaders are legal in the early muzzleloader season and during rifle season.  Maybe I am wrong.

My guess is that it was a Tenpoint.

My 9-yr old killed a buck two weeks ago with a crossbow. It was his second buck. Couldn't be happier with the new regs. My 8-yr olds have a good chance of killing bucks in the next two weeks. These are opportunities to hunt the rut that I never had as a kid.

Tenpoints are awesome bows. I've shot almost all the crossbows on the market and tenpoint is top notch. Crossbows are for pansies unless you can not draw a compound.

    So far this year:
    My 60# Hoyt Trykon: 1-1

My buddies 150# Horton xbow: 0-2

This is in Ohio where we've had xbows for as long as I can remember. Xbows have the speed but they lack in the weight of the bolt. Xbows should shoot at least 125gr broadheads unless they have some serious weight in there bolts....IMHO

Guys I killed an 8 pt in Ohio on Tues night. I shot him at 25 yards with a crossbow(125 lbs). The bolt went through BOTH shoulder blades and stuck in the ground. Only thing wrong with the muzzy broadhead was that one of the razors was slightly bent. UN!$#@#%$believeable!!!!   2 shots with my crossbow= 1 dead doe and 1 dead buck.

Noplacelikehome, I highly doubt your story... Because I have seen deer hit in the shoulder with rifles that didnt even pass through! There is a small pocket in the shoulder that contains no bone and is pure meat, that is most likely where you hit. Last year I was only pulling 42lbs on a compound and hit a buck in that very pocket and had a complete pass through. It is nothing a sharp broadhead cannot obtain so don't think your x-gun is what did the trick!

Then why were BOTH front legs flailing like wings?  There was ONLY one hole in the animal. Remember I said shoulder BLADES. The buck dressed out at 175 lbs.

Steel junkie, there was no blood whatsoever, til I found him pilled up 60 yards later. Good thing I watched where he stumbled-fell in the briars.

Bull lifter, that is exactly where I am talking although I guess it isnt that small, if you took away the black area on your photo that shows the leg bone it would appear as though you would have hit the shoulder blade. And BTW Noplacelikehome my buck bled none whatsoever also and crashed at 60 yards then got back up and only made it another 10 yards. But my question is if both frontlegs are like "chicken wings" how did the deer make it 60 yards?
