When tying jigs

How long of a tail is too long? I tie most as i would a bugger and measure from the shank to hook point and tie in. I have made some longer tails but was wondering the chance of short strikes and a miss with the hook point.Just wondering and would like to know what other tiers do.

I've tied some white marabou jigs for steelhead that were at least 3 inchs long on the small jig hooks. I use the short marabou plumes that are sold as shorts i believe and make them as long as i can. I've done the same thing with some size 10 short shank hooks and bead eyes for weight. As big as a steelheads mouth it they can handle them easily, plus the extra marabou will really sway in the current.
